If you’re mailing a 2026 estimated-tax payment with Form 1040-ES, use the corrected address for your state—not an address on a form you downloaded or printed before February 13, 2026. The IRS updated the form and published two domestic state-group addresses; its current online address page is the reference if printed instructions differ.

Which address should you use for a 2026 Form 1040-ES payment?

Choose the address by your state of residence. The IRS correction applies to 2026 Form 1040-ES vouchers used to mail estimated-tax payments. It says forms downloaded or printed before February 13, 2026 may show an outdated address; the correction page is dated February 23, 2026.

State or district of residence Mail the voucher and payment to
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 1300
Charlotte, NC 28201-1300
Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 931100
Louisville, KY 40293-1100

These are the two domestic state groups in the IRS correction. For the current calendar-year address listing, check the IRS where-to-file page for forms beginning with the number 1. The IRS warns that online addresses can differ from printed instructions when changes are made after publication. Form 1040-ES (NR), for nonresident alien individuals, has a separate address; don’t use the domestic groups above for that form or assume they apply to a territory.

How to mail a check or money order

  1. Use the 2026 Form 1040-ES voucher for the payment. The IRS says not to mail an estimated-tax payment without its voucher.
  2. Make the check or money order payable to “United States Treasury.” Do not send cash.
  3. Send the voucher and payment to the corrected P.O. box for your residence state. Do not use the address in the Form 1040 instructions.
  4. Use the U.S. Postal Service: only USPS can deliver to the listed P.O. boxes, so a private delivery service cannot deliver to them.

The IRS treats the U.S. postmark date as the payment date for a mailed payment. See the 2026 Form 1040-ES and its instructions for the voucher and payment details.

Can you pay estimated tax without mailing the voucher?

Yes. The IRS lists payment online, by phone, through the IRS2Go mobile app, and through an IRS online account, as well as by mail. These electronic options avoid mailing a Form 1040-ES voucher. Review the IRS estimated-tax payment options for current methods and instructions.

What estimated tax covers

Estimated tax is how you pay tax on income that is not subject to withholding, unless you choose to have tax withheld. Examples include self-employment earnings, interest, dividends, rents, and alimony. Form 1040-ES helps you figure and pay estimated tax. The IRS explains the form’s purpose on its About Form 1040-ES page.

What if your own mailing address changed?

The corrected voucher destination is not a way to update your personal address with the IRS. If you’re making estimated payments and changed your address during the year, IRS Publication 505 says to complete Form 8822 and mail it to the address in that form’s instructions. The publication states: “You must notify the IRS if you are making estimated tax payments and you changed your address during the year.” See Publication 505 (2026), Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax for the address-change instruction.
