There is no appropriate public list of valid CPF numbers to use for identifying people. A CPF that passes a format or check-digit test is not proof that it belongs to an enrolled person or that its registration is regular. For a legitimate check, use the Receita Federal do Brasil’s official CPF consultation service, which checks a record using personal information.
Why a list of “valid CPF numbers” is not a reliable check
CPF is Brazil’s Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas, a database managed by the Receita Federal. It holds registration information for Brazilian and foreign individuals, whether resident or non-resident in Brazil. It is a personal identifier, not a public directory of people.
“Valid” can mean different things. A number may look structurally plausible, but that alone does not establish that it is assigned to someone, matches a particular person, or has a regular registration status. A list of real identifiers would also expose sensitive personal information without answering those questions. Do not use or circulate lists of people’s CPF numbers.
How to check CPF registration status officially
The Receita Federal’s free, immediate consultation service lets a person enrolled in CPF consult registration status and register information, obtain proof of status, and verify the authenticity of that proof. The service is a record lookup, not a public bulk-list search.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the Receita Federal service for “Consultar CPF” or “Consultar situação cadastral do CPF.”
- Enter the 11 CPF digits and the date of birth associated with the record.
- Complete the “Sou humano” security check and select “Consultar.”
- Review the result in the official service. If you need to rely on a CPF proof document, use the service’s authenticity-verification option.
The Receita Federal’s form instructions describe these steps. Because the consultation uses personal data, it is intended for a legitimate check with the information needed to identify the record—not as a way to discover whose number a CPF might be.
What the CPF status labels mean
The Receita Federal FAQ describes these registration outcomes:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Regular: there is no registration pendency.
- Pendente de regularização: the person failed to submit an individual income-tax return identified by the FAQ within the last five years.
- Suspensa: registration information is incorrect or incomplete.
- Cancelada: the CPF was cancelled because of multiplicity, by administrative or judicial decision.
- Titular Falecido: a year of death has been recorded.
- Nula: the enrollment was found fraudulent and annulled.
If a result needs correction or explanation, follow the Receita Federal’s official guidance for that status rather than treating a number-format test as a remedy.
CPF registration status is not tax standing
The Receita Federal explicitly says that “situação cadastral é diferente de situação fiscal” (registration status is different from tax status). A CPF marked Regular means there is no registration pendency; it does not prove that the person has no tax debts or other tax issues. A CPF status lookup is therefore not a tax-clearance check.

What a check-digit validator can—and cannot—tell you
A local format or check-digit validator can assess only whether a number appears to meet structural rules. It cannot confirm that the CPF is assigned, that it belongs to a named person, or that the registration is regular. The Receita Federal materials cited here do not establish a check-digit formula, so no formula should be treated as an official status test.
For organizational use, the Receita Federal also describes a digital consultation solution that connects directly to its databases and returns CPF register information and status for a submitted number. That is an organization-oriented service, not authorization to publish or obtain a bulk list of valid identifiers.
Rank #4
Registration and privacy
The Receita Federal says CPF data may be shared with public bodies involved in providing and controlling public services when needed for correct identification, public policy, and fraud prevention, in accordance with Brazil’s LGPD. That description of public-service data sharing does not make CPF numbers or lists of them public information.
