Newton Housing Relief: Current Help for Rent or Mortgage Trouble

Newton’s old emergency housing plan offered short-term COVID-era help, but current aid is routed through programs such as RAFT and local resources.

The Newton housing relief plan in the headline was a COVID-era program, not proof that applications are open today. It offered eligible households limited short-term help with rent or mortgage costs. Newton now points residents toward other local and state resources, including RAFT and the Horace Industrial Cousens Fund. If you are behind on housing costs or at risk of eviction or foreclosure, check those current routes rather than relying on the old program’s terms.

What Newton’s COVID-era housing relief plan offered

The City of Newton’s historical COVID-19 Emergency Housing Relief Program was designed for households experiencing a negative economic impact from COVID-19. Its published terms described eligibility for current Newton residents with household income below 80% of area median income (AMI), subject to program requirements. Assistance could cover up to 70% of monthly rent or mortgage costs, capped at $2,500 per month and $7,500 over three months. City of Newton program information

Those figures describe the past program, not a current offer. The City’s archived application requested household and housing details, income sources, arrears, other housing assistance, and landlord or lender contact information. That form is evidence of the historical application process only; it does not establish that Newton is accepting applications now. Archived City project overview and application

Where Newton residents can look for help now

Newton’s current rent and mortgage assistance page points residents to the Massachusetts RAFT program, the Horace Industrial Cousens Fund, and other resources. Its eviction-diversion page also lists the Cousens Fund and Cares Connections emergency financial assistance for residents at risk of homelessness or eviction. Program availability, eligibility, documentation, and award decisions can change, so contact the relevant provider before relying on a benefit. RAFT: emergency help with housing costs

Massachusetts describes RAFT as emergency assistance for housing crises. The state’s current guidance says eligible households may receive up to $7,000 in a 12-month period, for costs that can include rent, utilities, moving expenses, and mortgage payments. The stated income threshold is generally below 50% of local AMI, with a higher threshold for households facing domestic violence; applicants also need to show housing instability or a crisis. Check the state application page and the instructions from the regional administering agency for current rules and required evidence. Massachusetts: Apply for RAFT

RAFT is not automatic mortgage or rent forgiveness. The state guidance sets eligibility criteria, and an application does not guarantee an award. Ask the administering agency which costs it can consider in your circumstances and what documentation to submit.

Newton identifies the Horace Industrial Cousens Fund as a local assistance route and lists Cares Connections on its eviction-diversion page. The cited City pages do not establish a benefit amount or complete current eligibility rules for either resource. What to do if you are behind on rent or your mortgage

  1. Start with Newton’s current assistance pages. Review the City’s Rent & Mortgage Assistance and Eviction Diversion information for the local routes it currently identifies.
  2. Check RAFT’s current application guidance. Use the Commonwealth’s RAFT application page and follow the instructions for the regional agency serving your area.
  3. Gather information about your housing crisis and finances. Be prepared to explain the housing cost or arrears, household income, and the event or circumstances creating instability. The agency will tell you exactly which documents it requires; Newton’s old application form is not a current checklist.
  4. Contact your landlord or mortgage lender. Ask about the amount due, deadlines, and any available payment arrangement while you pursue assistance. Do not assume an application pauses an eviction or foreclosure process.
  5. Ask Newton Social Services for navigation support. The City directs residents to Social Services for help finding an appropriate housing-resource path. Use the contact information on Newton’s current housing-resource page.

Emergency assistance is different from affordable housing

Emergency aid and eviction-diversion resources are intended to address an immediate housing crisis, subject to each program’s rules and funding. Subsidized housing, public housing, and rental vouchers are longer-term options with separate applications and eligibility standards; some have waitlists. Newton’s housing-resource page describes these options and points residents to Social Services for navigation. Newton Housing Resources

No attributable current statistic in the cited official material establishes how many Newton residents are facing rent or mortgage distress. A household’s eligibility and the availability of funding must be checked directly with the program; neither the historical Newton caps nor RAFT’s maximum promises a particular award.
