Which Days to Take PTO in 2025: A U.S. Holiday Guide (and What “55 Days” Really Means)

There is no verified schedule behind the promise of 55 vacation days in 2025. A sourced Axios guide instead recommends using 12 PTO days around holidays to create longer breaks. The dates below show how that approach works for a typical Monday-to-Friday U.S. workweek—but your employer’s holiday policy determines which days you actually get off.

First, what counts as a “vacation day”?

A break can include several different kinds of days: PTO charged to your leave balance, an employer-paid holiday, weekends that were already nonworking, and other calendar days away from work. Those categories are not interchangeable. For example, a four-day break around a Monday holiday usually means one PTO day, one paid holiday and two weekend days—not four vacation days charged to PTO.

The 55-day claim has not been tied to a verifiable publisher or calculation. Axios’s December 10, 2024, guide, “How to maximize your vacation days in 2025,” describes a different approach: combining 12 vacation days with federal holidays and weekends. The available information does not establish that its plan produces 55 days, so that figure should not be treated as a confirmed result.

2025 PTO dates that can extend a break

The table applies to a Monday-to-Friday schedule and assumes your employer observes the listed holiday on the date shown. “Days away” counts consecutive calendar days in each suggested block; it includes weekends and the holiday, not just PTO. For alternatives listed with “or,” each date is a separate option, not an additional day to take.

Holiday Take PTO PTO charged Employer-paid holiday in block Weekend days Consecutive days away
New Year’s Day, Wednesday, Jan. 1 Mon., Dec. 30 and Tue., Dec. 31, 2024 2 1 2 5 (Dec. 28–Jan. 1)
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 20 Fri., Jan. 17 or Tue., Jan. 21 1 1 2 4
Washington’s Birthday, Monday, Feb. 17 Fri., Feb. 14 or Tue., Feb. 18 1 1 2 4
Memorial Day, Monday, May 26 Fri., May 23 or Tue., May 27 1 1 2 4
Juneteenth, Thursday, June 19 Fri., June 20 1 1 2 4 (June 19–22)
Independence Day, Friday, July 4 Thu., July 3 or Mon., July 7 1 1 2 4
Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1 Fri., Aug. 29 or Tue., Sept. 2 1 1 2 4
Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 13 Fri., Oct. 10 or Tue., Oct. 14 1 1 2 4
Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11 Mon., Nov. 10 1 1 2 4 (Nov. 8–11)

These are the date blocks listed in Axios’s guide. The table does not add the blocks together: options around the same holiday are alternatives, and a count across the year would need to account for the actual leave charged, any overlapping days, and the distinction between workdays and calendar days.

Check which holidays apply to your job

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) lists 11 federal holidays in 2025: New Year’s Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 20), Washington’s Birthday (Feb. 17), Memorial Day (May 26), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (Sept. 1), Columbus Day (Oct. 13), Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25). OPM also lists Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 for eligible federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area; it falls on the same date as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2025. Federal holiday dates do not automatically give every private-sector employee paid leave. The Department of Labor explains that the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require pay for time not worked, including vacations or holidays; those benefits are generally determined by agreement between employer and employee or their representative. Check your workplace calendar or leave policy before booking time off. See the Department of Labor’s holiday guidance.

How to use the plan without miscounting

  1. Confirm your employer’s holiday calendar. Check whether your workplace observes the holiday listed and whether the observed date differs from the federal date.
  2. Choose a block that fits your schedule. The listed four-day breaks assume Saturday and Sunday are already nonworking days. If you work a different schedule, the same PTO date may not create the same length of break.
  3. Count leave separately from time away. Record the PTO days that will be deducted, the paid holidays your employer provides, and the consecutive calendar days you will be away. Do not label the total calendar span as PTO.
  4. Get leave approval before making nonrefundable plans. A date strategy does not guarantee that requested leave will be approved.
