10 Grocery Chains With Standout Produce Departments—and What the Evidence Shows

No national study directly ranks ten chains by produce freshness. Here’s what quality indexes, satisfaction scores and sourcing policies can—and can’t—tell you.

There is no current national ranking that compares the freshness or taste of produce at ten grocery chains. The strongest available evidence points to Wegmans, Whole Foods and Sprouts for overall retailer quality—not produce alone—while shopper satisfaction, local-product variety and sourcing policies offer other useful but distinct ways to compare stores. Use the ten chains below as a practical shortlist, then judge the produce at the branches you can actually shop.

How to read this list

This is an evidence-informed shortlist, not a measured ranking of produce departments. Dunnhumby’s ninth annual U.S. Grocery Retailer Preference Index names Wegmans, Whole Foods and Sprouts its top three retailers in the broader Quality pillar. That pillar reflects overall retailer quality perception; it does not report produce-only freshness or taste tests. The index also highlights different strengths, such as ambience, healthy assortment, private-brand quality and local-product variety, which should not be treated as interchangeable measures of produce quality. Dunnhumby’s index.

ACSI’s 2026 supermarket results provide a separate measure: overall customer satisfaction, based on data collected from January through December 2025. ACSI also reports an industry-wide score for meat-and-produce freshness, but not comparable produce scores for individual chains. These measures help frame a choice; neither proves that one chain’s produce is fresher than another’s. ACSI’s 2026 supermarket results.

Ten chains to consider

1. Wegmans

Wegmans is the clearest starting point if broad product-quality perception matters: Dunnhumby identifies it as the market leader for overall product quality and places it among the top three in its Quality pillar. That is a retailer-wide finding, not a direct assessment of fruits and vegetables. In ACSI’s 2026 results, Wegmans scored 78 for overall supermarket satisfaction, using data collected in 2025; that score is also not produce-specific. Dunnhumby; ACSI.

2. Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods also ranks among Dunnhumby’s top three in the overall Quality pillar, with strengths noted for ambience and healthy assortment. Friends of the Earth’s 2025 scorecard reports that Whole Foods says 33% of its grocery assortment is organic; that figure covers the overall grocery assortment, not produce alone, and does not establish freshness. ACSI’s 2026 overall satisfaction score for Whole Foods was 81, based on 2025 data. Dunnhumby; Friends of the Earth’s 2025 scorecard; ACSI.

3. Sprouts Farmers Market

Sprouts completes Dunnhumby’s top three for overall retailer quality. Friends of the Earth’s 2025 scorecard gives Sprouts an A-range result and reports that certified organic items account for 30% of its grocery sales. That is a sales measure, not a share of produce or a freshness rating. Dunnhumby; Friends of the Earth.

4. Trader Joe’s

Dunnhumby identifies Trader Joe’s as the leader in private-brand quality, a finding about store-brand products generally rather than its produce department. Friends of the Earth reports that Trader Joe’s says over 20% of grocery products sold are organic; the denominator differs from the assortment and sales measures reported for other chains, so the percentages are not directly comparable. Trader Joe’s led ACSI’s 2026 overall supermarket satisfaction results with a score of 86, based on 2025 data. Dunnhumby; Friends of the Earth; ACSI.

5. Costco

Dunnhumby singles out Costco for local-product variety. That may matter to shoppers seeking locally sourced options, but the finding is about variety, not produce freshness or flavor. Costco’s ACSI overall satisfaction score was 81 in the 2026 results, based on data collected in 2025. Dunnhumby; ACSI.

6. Big Y

Big Y is another retailer Dunnhumby identifies as ahead on local-product variety. The index does not say that this advantage applies specifically to produce, nor does it provide a produce freshness score. Check whether nearby branches carry the local items you want. Dunnhumby’s index.

7. Publix

Publix scored 84 for overall supermarket satisfaction in ACSI’s 2026 results, based on data collected from January through December 2025. This places it near the top of that survey’s satisfaction results, but ACSI does not publish a chain-specific produce freshness score on the reviewed page. ACSI.

8. H-E-B

H-E-B earned an overall satisfaction score of 83 in ACSI’s 2026 results, based on 2025 data. That is useful context for the full shopping experience, not a rating of H-E-B’s produce department. ACSI.

9. Kroger

Kroger describes relationships with farmers and technology intended to move fresh products efficiently while keeping them at appropriate temperatures. Those are the company’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent comparison with other retailers. Kroger also says 70% of its customers identify freshness as the primary way they decide where to shop; the page does not state the survey date or methodology, and the figure is not a Kroger produce-quality score. 10. Walmart

Walmart describes supplier-accountability standards, routine facility sanitation, store inspections and associate food-safety training. These are Walmart’s stated procedures, not independently verified comparative results or evidence of a chain-specific freshness advantage. Walmart’s food-safety information.

What the produce-freshness numbers can—and cannot—tell you

ACSI gives “Quality and freshness of meat and produce” an industry score of 83 in both 2025 and 2026. The 2026 results draw on data collected from January through December 2025. Because this is an industry-level measure, it cannot be assigned to Wegmans, Publix or any other individual chain. ACSI’s chain scores measure overall supermarket satisfaction instead. ACSI’s results and methodology notes.

Sustainability indicators answer a different question. Friends of the Earth’s 2025 scorecard assesses pesticide and pollinator policies as well as organic assortment. It says Walmart, Kroger, Whole Foods, Meijer and Giant Eagle require fresh-produce suppliers to use third-party-verified integrated pest management practices. The report also says the USDA Organic seal prohibits more than 900 synthetic pesticides. These are sourcing and policy signals; they do not show that organic or integrated-pest-management produce is fresher or tastes better. Friends of the Earth’s 2025 scorecard.

How to choose the best produce department near you

  1. Start with the items you buy. A department is useful when it regularly has the fruits, vegetables and quantities on your list, not just an impressive overall reputation.

  2. Compare nearby branches in person. National sources reviewed here do not measure variation between locations or seasons. Check the selection and condition at the specific stores available to you.

  3. Decide which signal matters most. Overall quality perception, satisfaction, local-product variety, organic assortment and retailer-stated handling practices describe different things. Choose according to your priorities rather than treating any one as a universal freshness score.

  4. Reassess as stock changes. Produce availability is seasonal, and a store that suits your usual shopping may not have the same selection every week.
