That is a general estimate, not a guaranteed date. The April 15, 2026, filing deadline has passed; to find out when your own refund will arrive, check the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tracker.
How long does a federal tax refund take?
Timing depends first on how you filed. The IRS says most qualifying e-filed returns with direct deposit are refunded within 21 days. Paper returns can take six or more weeks from the date the IRS receives them. Neither estimate guarantees a payment date: an incomplete or inaccurate return, a correction, or additional review can extend processing.
For the 2026 filing season, the IRS said that more than 80 percent of refunds had been issued in less than 21 days through March 20, 2026. The average refund amount at that point was $3,571. Those are dated, season-wide figures—not a forecast for an individual refund or a measure of how quickly a particular return will be processed. See the IRS’s April 2, 2026 season update.
Check your refund status with the IRS
Use the free Where’s My Refund? service for a personalized status. You can also check through an IRS online account or the IRS mobile app. The tracker generally becomes available 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, or four weeks after you mail a paper return.

Have these details ready: your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, tax year, and the exact refund amount shown on your return. Enter them only in an official IRS service; you do not need to share them with a publisher.
What the IRS refund statuses mean
- Return Received: The IRS has received the return and is processing it.
- Refund Approved: The IRS has processed the return and approved a refund. The tracker provides an estimated issue date.
- Refund Sent: The IRS has sent the refund. A bank or financial institution may need additional time to post a direct deposit.
A status is a processing update, not a promise that money will be immediately available in your account. The tracker generally updates overnight, so checking once a day is enough.

Why a refund may take longer
Errors, missing information, or additional review
A return that needs correction or further review may take longer than the usual estimate. If the IRS needs more information or adjusts your refund, it will contact you by mail. Follow the instructions in the letter and in the status tracker.
EITC or ACTC claims
By law, the IRS must hold refunds for returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until mid-February. The hold applies to the entire refund, not just the portion associated with those credits.

Paper filing
Mailed returns generally take longer than electronic returns. The IRS advises allowing six or more weeks from receipt for a paper return; the status checker may not show information until four weeks after mailing.
Amended returns
An amended return follows a separate process. Use the IRS’s Where’s My Amended Return? tool rather than the standard refund tracker.

When should you contact the IRS?
First check the tracker and follow any directions it gives you. The IRS generally advises waiting at least three weeks after e-filing or six weeks after mailing a paper return before contacting it, unless the tracker tells you to get in touch sooner. Calling will not speed up processing, and checking repeatedly will not move a refund along.

No. These estimates and tracking instructions are for federal refunds. State refunds are handled separately, so use the relevant state tax agency’s status service for an estimate or update.

What this means for the 2026 filing season
The 2026 season covered 2025 federal income tax returns, opened in January 2026, and had an April 15, 2026 filing deadline, according to the IRS season-opening announcement. Since that deadline has passed, the general timing guidance cannot tell you the status of a particular return. Your IRS tracker result is the place to check whether it has been received, approved, or sent.
