For the S&P 500 options market, Cboe showed a VIX spot reading of 15.31 on October 2, 2026. A separate data series records a 16.39 daily close on October 1, 2026. Those are readings from different dates and observation types—not live quotes for October 4. The VIX describes options-market expectations for the size of S&P 500 moves over roughly the next 30 days, not whether stocks will rise or fall.
What does the VIX say about stock-market volatility?
The Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, is an options-based measure of expected near-term volatility for the S&P 500. Cboe says it reflects market expectations conveyed by S&P 500 index option prices. The Federal Reserve describes it as expected annualized variability over the following 30 days.
In plain terms, the VIX offers a snapshot of how much movement options prices imply investors are preparing for. It does not forecast the direction of that movement, measure volatility already experienced, or provide a volatility score for every stock or asset market.
The VIX is an implied measure: it is derived from option prices. Realized volatility, by contrast, describes how much prices actually moved over a period. The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 report also discussed a forecast of one-month realized volatility derived from five-minute S&P 500 returns; that is a different measure from the VIX.

What are the latest dated VIX readings?
| Reading | Observation | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| 15.31 | VIX spot price | Cboe, as of October 2, 2026 |
| 16.39 | Daily close | ALFRED, October 1, 2026 observation, updated October 2 |
These figures should not be treated as conflicting: one is a spot observation dated October 2 and the other is the October 1 daily close. Neither is a live quote for October 4. Because the VIX changes, check a current market-data source and note its timestamp and whether it reports a spot reading or a close.
How did volatility change during 2026?
The Federal Reserve’s Monetary Policy Report submitted July 10, 2026 described a volatile first part of the year. It said the S&P 500 had risen about 9 percent since the beginning of the year despite sizable fluctuations. Prices reacted to developments in the AI sector and the Middle East conflict; after large declines from late January through late March, the index recovered to record highs as earnings and risk sentiment improved.

The report said the VIX reached around 30 percent in late March and was near the median of its historical distribution at the time of the report. Those are observations within the period covered by the July report, not readings for October or a forecast of what comes next.
How should you interpret a VIX level?
- Attach a timestamp. A spot observation and a daily close can differ because they refer to different moments or periods.
- Keep the market in scope. The VIX concerns options on the S&P 500. It does not directly measure the expected volatility of an individual company, international shares, or other asset classes.
- Separate expectation from outcome. The VIX reflects option-implied expectations, which may differ from the market’s subsequent realized volatility.
- Avoid treating a single number as a universal threshold. The Federal Reserve described the July report’s contemporaneous reading against its historical distribution; the sources here do not establish a universal cutoff for “high” or “low” volatility.
Is the VIX itself something you can trade?
The VIX reading is an index level, not an ordinary share or a guarantee of a particular market move. Cboe lists VIX futures and options as separate products with their own characteristics. They may be used for hedging or trading, but they are not interchangeable with monitoring the index, and their behavior depends on the instrument and time frame. A volatility-linked position is not a simple or guaranteed hedge against falling share prices.
