TekDry’s former consumer kiosk business appears to have shrunk sharply, but a simple “closed” verdict is not supported by the available evidence: Staples still lists TekDry-branded wet-device recovery at select stores. That listing does not establish that TekDry operates today as a standalone company, so its current corporate status remains unclear.
What TekDry did on Shark Tank
TekDry offered an in-store service for recovering water-damaged phones, tablets and other electronics using a machine. It was a service customers brought devices to, not a home-use product. TekDry’s LinkedIn profile describes its work as wet-electronics recovery, identifies Denver as its base and gives a 2013 founding date: TekDry’s LinkedIn profile.
Founders Adam Cookson and Craig Beinecke appeared on Season 8, Episode 3, according to the Shark Tank Companies update. The update says they asked for $500,000 in exchange for 5% equity and accepted an on-air deal with Kevin O’Leary. Treat that as the reported pitch and on-air agreement: available sources do not establish the final executed contract terms.
What happened to TekDry afterward?
A retrospective account from Shark Tank Archive describes an expansion through retail partnerships, including a broad Staples presence by 2022, followed by a contraction to only a small number of locations by 2023. It also says the consumer website went offline. These are secondary-source historical claims; they do not establish an exact shutdown date or current store count.

The same account suggests TekDry technology may have shifted toward medical or industrial applications, but that pivot is not independently confirmed by the current sources. It should not be treated as an established explanation for what happened to the consumer operation.
Is TekDry still in business?
There is no conclusive answer about TekDry’s standalone corporate status. One company-update directory labels it out of business, while Staples continues to publish TekDry-branded service listings. A retailer listing confirms that the service is advertised, not that TekDry remains an independent operating company or that every listed location is currently participating.

The best-supported distinction is between TekDry’s once-broader retail footprint, which secondary reporting says contracted, and the wet-device recovery service Staples still lists at select stores. The evidence does not resolve whether the company itself remains active.

Staples lists TekDry-branded recovery at select locations. Its pages describe service for small devices, smartphones and tablets, and some larger devices. The retailer says treatment typically takes about 30 minutes, but availability depends on the store. Check with your local Staples before travelling.

One listing gives tiers of $39.99 for small devices, $69.99 for medium devices and $99.99 for some large devices; a separate listing gives a different price for Smartphone Wet Device Recovery. What to do if a phone gets wet
- Shut the device off.
- Do not plug it in.
- Contact a local Staples store to confirm it offers the service and ask about current pricing and turnaround before taking the device in.
These first two steps reflect Staples’ own guidance. The retailer also presents a comparison claiming 13% water removal for rice, 15% for air and 100% for TekDry, attributing the figures to “DTJ Consulting and TekDry’s Evaluation of ‘Rice as Method of Drying Out Waterlogged Cell Phones’.” Those are vendor-associated evaluation claims, not independent, broadly applicable odds that a wet device will be recovered. They should not be read as a guarantee of success.
