James Howells has reportedly ended his effort to excavate or buy the Newport landfill where he says a hard drive containing access data for his Bitcoin was discarded. The physical search ended in August 2025, according to a technology article published on 18 August 2026; Howells was still asserting a claim to the Bitcoin. The landfill search and the question of who can access the coins are not the same thing.
What happened to James Howells’s Bitcoin hard drive?
Howells, from Newport, Wales, says a hard drive holding the private-key material needed to access Bitcoin he had mined was mistakenly thrown away in 2013 and taken to Docksway Landfill. Bitcoin is not stored physically on a hard drive: the drive reportedly contained wallet or key data that could provide access to it. The account and the amount of Bitcoin are claims attributed to Howells, not independently audited findings. Court judgment summary and ITV’s report describe the case.
ITV reported that Howells said he had mined 8,000 Bitcoin. The indexed summary of the court judgment says he valued the inaccessible Bitcoin at more than £600 million when he brought his claim. Those are distinct reported figures: neither establishes the coins’ value today, and the sources reviewed do not support treating the headline’s $742 million as a current valuation.
Did the court let him dig up the landfill?
No. On 9 January 2025, the High Court dismissed Howells’s claim against Newport City Council. He had sought access to the landfill to recover the drive or compensation. ITV reported that Judge Andrew Keyser KC found the claim had no reasonable grounds and no realistic prospect of success at trial. The judge also said: “I also consider that the claim would have no realistic prospect of succeeding if it went to trial and that there is no other compelling reason why it should be disposed of at trial.” ITV’s report of the judgment

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The dismissal was not a finding that the Bitcoin had been destroyed or transferred to the council. Nor did the ruling recover or test the drive. The sources do not establish that it survived in the landfill or that its contents could still be read.
Did Howells give up looking for the Bitcoin?
He reportedly stopped pursuing the physical search in August 2025, ending efforts to excavate or buy the landfill, pursue remediation, and negotiate further with the council. A technology article published on 18 August 2026 reported that he continued to assert a claim to the Bitcoin. That is a report of Howells’s position, not proof of legal ownership or of access to the coins. Technology article published 18 August 2026

Howells had earlier described his litigation strategy to LBC as a way to “use the case as leverage” to bring Newport council “to the negotiating table.” That was his explanation of his approach, not a finding by the court. LBC interview

It is a historical headline estimate, not a stable or verified current value. The court summary records Howells’s claim that the Bitcoin was worth more than £600 million at the time of his claim; ITV separately reported his assertion that he had mined 8,000 Bitcoin. Bitcoin prices fluctuate, and the sources cited here do not establish a current dollar valuation for the coins. The $742 million figure should therefore be read as a point-in-time estimate, not what the Bitcoin is worth now.
