Does the NYT Mini Crossword Require a Subscription?

The NYT’s current Games help page includes the daily Mini in Games access and does not list it among daily games available without Games. Here’s how plans and the puzzle archive differ.

Yes: according to the New York Times’ current Games subscription help page, the daily Mini Crossword is included with a Games subscription, and the page’s list of daily games available without a subscription that includes Games does not include the Mini. Eligible Home Delivery and All Access plans also include Games. If the Mini has suddenly shown you a subscription prompt, check whether your account already has one of those plans before buying another. NYT Games subscription details.

What changed—and what is confirmed

PC Gamer reported on August 29, 2025, that it encountered a subscriber lock in the Android app and a changed subscription prompt on the web. That is dated reporting of observed behavior, not an official New York Times announcement establishing the exact date the access change took effect for every player. PC Gamer’s August 29, 2025 report.

The current official subscription help page provides the clearest answer about access now: it includes the Mini with Games, while its list of daily games available to people without a subscription that includes Games omits the Mini. It does not explain why access changed. NYT Games subscription details.

Which NYT plans include the Mini?

Access route What the available information establishes
Games subscription Games includes the Mini. The official help page directs readers to the Games subscription page for current pricing; a price was not verified here.
Eligible Home Delivery plan Games is included with eligible Home Delivery plans. Check your specific plan’s benefits.
All Access Games is included with All Access.
No subscription that includes Games The current official list of daily games available without Games access names Wordle, Connections, Connections Sports Edition, Crossplay, Pips, Strands, Sudoku, and limited Spelling Bee access; it does not list the Mini.

Plan terms, availability, and prices can vary. Use the current Games subscription help page and its link to subscription options rather than relying on old prices or promotions.

Daily Mini access is different from the archive

A subscription also matters if you want to solve older puzzles. The current Games help page describes an archive of more than 10,000 Crosswords, including Minis dating back to 2014. An older Mini-specific help result said Games and All Access subscribers could solve past Minis, but its original page now redirects to a closed help center; the current Games page is the stronger reference for present archive information. What to check if you see a lock

  1. Check the account you are signed into. Make sure the app or website is using the same NYT account associated with any Games, eligible Home Delivery, or All Access plan you have.
  2. Check your plan benefits. Confirm that your specific subscription includes Games; not every subscription category necessarily does.
  3. Review current Games options only if you need access. The official help page links to current subscription pricing and options. Compare the plan details with any existing NYT subscription before purchasing.

Why the Mini became subscriber-only

The sources establishing the access situation do not provide an official explanation for the change. The Mini’s inclusion in Games confirms what the subscription covers; it does not establish the New York Times’ business rationale for changing access.

New bonus puzzles are a separate offering

In a September 2, 2026 announcement, The New York Times Company said Games and All Access subscribers would receive weekly bonus puzzles. Possible offerings include Mystery Mini, a variation that changes the grid presentation or clues. That announcement concerns additional weekly puzzles, not the access terms for the regular daily Mini. The New York Times Company announcement.
