India’s peak electricity demand in FY 2024-25 reached 249,856 MW, exceeding the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) earlier projection of 244,565 MW by 5,291 MW, or about 2.2%. That is consistent with an expanding economy and rising electricity needs, but it is not proof of economic growth on its own: unusually hot weather and demand for cooling also helped drive electricity use.
How far did India’s electricity demand exceed the forecast?
The CEA’s 20th Electric Power Survey, published in November 2022, projected a peak demand of 244,565 MW for FY 2024-25. The CEA’s later Growth Book 2025 reports an actual peak of 249,856 MW. The difference is 5,291 MW—approximately 2.2% above the projection, calculated from those two CEA figures. CEA Growth Book 2025; the survey projection is reproduced in a Ministry of Power release.

This is a comparison between a forecast made in an earlier planning survey and the later reported annual peak. It does not mean that electricity use grew by 2.2%, nor is it a comparison of GDP growth rates.
What does the higher peak say about India’s economy?
It shows that India needed more electricity at its highest-demand moment than the CEA’s earlier projection anticipated. That is compatible with economic expansion: businesses, households, infrastructure and new electric uses all require power. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that electricity demand in India grew 5.8% year on year in 2024 amid strong economic activity and electrification. IEA, Electricity 2025: Demand.

But a peak-demand forecast miss is only one indicator. It cannot isolate the contribution of economic growth from other influences, and it should not be treated as a standalone measure of economic performance.
Heat and air-conditioning can raise demand sharply
Weather matters because hot conditions increase the need for air-conditioning and other cooling. The IEA reported that India’s electricity consumption rose 8.5% in the first half of 2024, with unusually intense, prolonged heatwaves providing a major boost. Demand growth was more subdued in the second half as weather became milder. That pattern helps explain why electricity demand can rise even when underlying economic activity has not changed at the same pace.
Peak demand is not the same as total electricity use
Peak demand is the highest load reached at a particular moment, usually expressed in megawatts (MW) or gigawatts (GW). Annual energy requirement or consumption measures electricity over a period and is reported in units such as million units (MU) or billion units (BU). A higher peak says how much power the system had to supply at its busiest point; it does not, by itself, tell you how much electricity the country used over the full year.
For a sound comparison, match the same measure and period: peak demand with peak demand, or annual energy with annual energy. The CEA’s long-term survey forecasts both for FY 2031-32, but those figures are projections, not observed outcomes:

The Ministry of Power said the country met a maximum demand of about 250 GW in FY 2024-25, describing it as an all-time maximum. It also said energy supplied was broadly commensurate with energy requirement, with a marginal national gap generally associated with state transmission or distribution constraints. That national account is not a guarantee that every region or consumer had uninterrupted service. A country can meet a national peak while local transmission or distribution limitations still affect delivery in particular places.
