Fill in the date, the recipient name or names, the dollar amount in numerals and words, and your signature. The memo line is optional. The main decision is how to name the payees: a check to two people joined by “and” generally requires both to endorse it, while “or” generally lets either person sign. Because banks can apply their own deposit procedures, use names the couple prefers and check with their bank if the wording causes a problem.
Fill out the check field by field
- Date: Write the date you are writing the check.
- Pay to the order of: Write the recipient’s name or names. Use the names the couple prefers; do not assume they share a surname or that either person has changed their name.
- Dollar box: Write the gift amount in numerals.
- Amount line: Write the same amount in words. Check that the written and numeric amounts match before signing.
- Memo: Optionally write “Wedding gift” to help identify the payment.
- Signature: Sign the check. An unsigned check is not complete.
These are the standard fields identified in bank guidance from Chase and Capital One. Add a personal message in the card rather than trying to fit it on the check.
Choose the payee wording with deposits in mind
You can name one recipient or both. The wording between two names may affect who must endorse the check:

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says checks issued to two people together, such as “Pat and Chris Doe,” generally need both signatures before a bank or credit union cashes or deposits them. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s consumer resource says that when a check is issued to “John or Jane Doe,” generally only one payee needs to sign. See the CFPB guidance and HelpWithMyBank.gov guidance. These are general explanations, not a guarantee that every bank will handle every check identically.

Use names the couple recognizes
Write names carefully and avoid assuming that marriage means a shared surname. If you are unsure whether one or both names should appear, use the couple’s stated preference or a name you know matches their current banking records. Daniel Post Senning of the Emily Post Institute advises addressing people as they want to be addressed; Kiplinger reported that guidance in its 2026 article, “How to Write a Check for a Wedding Gift.”

The recipients should ask their own bank what it will accept if a name, name change, joint-payee wording, or endorsement requirement creates a problem. A bank may need to verify the payees or apply its own deposit procedures; the general “and” and “or” guidance does not settle every institution’s requirements.
