For U.S. couples married in 2025, The Knot reported an average spend of $3,000 on wedding rings and $4,600 on engagement rings. Those are separate survey averages—not recommended budgets—and “wedding ring” can mean a band, an engagement ring, or the pair. Decide which purchase you mean and what you can comfortably afford before using either figure as a comparison point.

What does “wedding ring” mean?

The term is used in different ways. A wedding band is the ring exchanged at the wedding; an engagement ring is generally given when proposing. Some people use “wedding ring” to mean either one, while others mean the engagement ring and band together. The Knot reports wedding-ring and engagement-ring spending as distinct categories, so the figures should not be treated as the cost of a band alone or of a combined set.

What is the average cost of a wedding ring?

The Knot’s report on its 2026 Real Weddings Study puts average wedding-ring spending at $3,000 and average engagement-ring spending at $4,600 among U.S. couples married in 2025. The study surveyed 10,474 couples. These are survey averages, not medians, current retail quotes, or estimates of what every couple paid. The report does not establish a comparable average for a wedding band alone. The Knot’s report explains the study and its wedding-cost findings.

Because the categories differ, compare like with like: a quote for one band is not directly comparable to an average that may refer to wedding rings more broadly, and neither figure is a set price for an engagement ring plus band.

How much should you spend on a wedding ring?

There is no salary-based amount you have to spend. An average describes spending by a surveyed group; it does not show what is right for your finances or priorities. Start with the amount you can spend comfortably without undermining essential expenses, savings goals, or other commitments. Treat that limit as a ceiling, not a target you need to reach.

  1. Define the purchase. Decide whether you are budgeting for an engagement ring, a wedding band, or both.
  2. Set a total limit. Choose an amount that fits your finances, rather than working backward from a survey average.
  3. Compare equivalent options. Check whether each quoted price covers one ring or a set, and what is included.
  4. Choose priorities. Compare design, material, center-stone choice, and included extras within your limit.

How do ring choices affect what you compare?

Design, material, and stone choice can change what you are comparing, but the available study figures do not break costs down by those features. Ask sellers for complete prices and make sure you are comparing the same scope—one ring against one ring, or a set against a set—before drawing conclusions.

Lab-grown stones are a meaningful comparison point for engagement-ring shoppers: The Knot Worldwide says 61% of engagement rings in its 2026 Real Weddings Study had lab-grown center stones. That finding describes surveyed purchases; by itself, it does not establish the quality, durability, resale value, or price of any particular ring. The Knot Worldwide’s study announcement provides the figure.

Is the three-month salary rule real?

It is not a required personal-finance rule. The survey averages above do not validate a salary formula, and no salary multiple is necessary to decide what you can afford. Use your own budget and priorities instead of treating a slogan or population average as a spending obligation.
