What does the USD/EUR rate mean?
USD/EUR states how many euros one US dollar converts to. The ECB publishes its daily reference rate in the opposite direction: how many US dollars one euro buys. Its 2 October 2026 figure was 1.1225 USD per EUR. To express that as USD/EUR, calculate 1 ÷ 1.1225, which is approximately 0.8909 EUR per USD.
Quote direction matters: 1 EUR = 1.1225 USD and 1 USD ≈ 0.8909 EUR describe the same exchange relationship from opposite sides. The reciprocal is a calculation from the ECB figure, not the quote printed in its table.
Is the ECB rate what you will pay to exchange money?
No. The ECB says its reference rates are for information and strongly discourages using them for transactions. They are averages of buying and selling rates and do not necessarily reflect actual market transactions. A bank, card issuer, exchange bureau or transfer provider can offer a different rate and charge fees.

For a real conversion, compare the provider’s offered rate and all fees, then look at the final amount you will receive or pay. A benchmark rate alone does not show the cost of a transaction.
Why can official USD/EUR figures differ?
Rates are comparable only when their direction, date or period, publisher and method are clear. A daily reference observation is not the same measure as a monthly average.

These figures cover different periods and use different stated methods, so they are context rather than competing quotes for the same moment. The Federal Reserve figure is not a daily rate for 2 October.

For the latest ECB observation, use its euro foreign exchange reference rates page and read the date shown with the USD value. Rates are normally updated around 16:00 CET on working days, except TARGET closing days; a prior observation should not be described as today’s rate if today’s publication has not appeared.
For historical lookup, the ECB Data Portal identifies the daily US-dollar/euro reference series as EXR.D.USD.EUR.SP00.A. Preserve its quote orientation when downloading, charting or calculating a reciprocal.

How to assess an exchange-rate figure or offer
- Quote direction: Check whether the figure is USD per EUR or EUR per USD.
- Date and period: Distinguish a dated daily observation, a monthly average and a provider’s transaction quote.
- Publisher and method: Note who issued the rate and how it was calculated.
- Total transaction cost: For an actual exchange, include the provider’s spread and fees and compare the resulting amount.
