The right food subscription depends first on what you want delivered: ingredients to cook, prepared meals to reheat, or specialty foods such as snacks or meat. That distinction matters to both your schedule and your budget. This guide compares the services and editorial picks identified in 2026 coverage; it does not claim that this publisher personally tested 28 boxes.
Start with what arrives—and how much work remains
Meal kits
A meal kit sends ingredients and recipes for you to cook. Its listed serving price does not include the time spent preparing the meal or cleaning up, so compare it with your actual alternative: groceries and the cooking you would otherwise do.
Prepared meals
A prepared-meal subscription sends meals intended to be reheated or eaten with little preparation. It can reduce shopping and cooking effort, but a quoted meal price is not the same as the final delivered cost. Fortune’s 2026 roundup explicitly distinguishes Factor’s prepared meals from HelloFresh’s meal kits.
Specialty boxes
Snack, meat and seafood subscriptions are adjacent categories, not interchangeable with dinner meal kits or prepared meals. If a box is mainly for snacks or ingredients such as meat, assess it as a grocery or specialty-food purchase rather than assuming its price is comparable to a complete meal.

What 2026 roundups identify
The following are attributed editorial picks, not a universal ranking. Food Network’s August 19, 2026 guide named five standouts. Fortune’s 2026 roundup reported price examples for Factor and HelloFresh. Prices and stock can change, and the cited figures are not guaranteed checkout totals.
| Service | What the cited coverage says | Price information reported |
|---|---|---|
| HelloFresh | Food Network named it best overall. Fortune identifies it as a meal kit. | Fortune reported about $8.99–$12.49 per serving and listed shipping separately; these are dated, plan-dependent figures, not a guaranteed current price. |
| Factor | Fortune identifies it as a prepared-meal service. | Fortune reported popular options averaging $12.99 per meal; the figure is dated and plan-dependent, not a guaranteed current checkout price. |
| Splendid Spoon | Food Network named it its plant-based pick. | Not stated in the cited Food Network guide summary. |
| Sunbasket | Food Network named it its pick for variety. | Not stated in the cited Food Network guide summary. |
| Marley Spoon | Food Network named it its pick for families. | Not stated in the cited Food Network guide summary. |
| EveryPlate | Food Network named it its value pick. | Not stated in the cited Food Network guide summary. |

Compare the full delivered cost, not the headline price
Use the checkout total for the plan you would actually order. A useful comparison is:
Cost per delivered meal = (food total + shipping + required fees + add-ons you choose) ÷ number of meals delivered.
Rank #3
Keep the serving basis consistent. A kit’s serving price may not match a prepared meal’s per-meal price, and the number of servings in an order is not necessarily the number of meals for one person. Calculate the cost for your household and the number of dinners or lunches you expect to use.
- Separate promotion from recurring cost. Record the price after any introductory offer ends, not just the first-box amount. Check whether a discount applies to one delivery or several.
- Include delivery and extras. Add shipping and any paid add-ons you expect to select. If the checkout does not show a cost clearly, do not treat the advertised food price as the delivered total.
- Compare against a realistic alternative. For a kit, include the value of your cooking time and the groceries you would otherwise buy. For a prepared meal, consider whether the convenience replaces takeout, a grocery meal, or another option.
- Use your actual order size. A price that works for a larger household may not work if you need only a few portions or cannot use every meal before it goes to waste.
Match the service to your household
Choose by effort and schedule
If you want to cook, a kit leaves you with preparation and cleanup. If those are the tasks you are trying to avoid, a prepared meal is the closer fit. Think through when deliveries arrive and when you can use them; a weekly plan is a poor value if its schedule does not fit your routine.
Rank #4
Check menus and dietary details for the exact item
Do not rely on a broad label such as “plant-based” to establish that every meal suits your diet. Review the current menu and product-level ingredient and allergen information for the specific meals you plan to order. Availability and details can depend on the product and delivery address.
Verify delivery and plan terms before paying
Enter your delivery address to confirm service and available delivery days. Then read the provider’s current rules for changing a delivery, skipping, pausing, and canceling. These terms are provider-specific and can change; a general promise that subscriptions are “flexible” is not a substitute for checking the live terms.

A practical way to decide
- Choose the category. Decide whether you want ingredients to cook, prepared meals, or a specialty box.
- Set your usable order size. Count the meals and servings your household will realistically eat, and note how much preparation you are willing to do.
- Check fit before price. Review the current menu, dietary and allergen information, address eligibility, and delivery days.
- Calculate the recurring delivered cost. Add shipping and planned extras, divide by the meals you will use, and distinguish the regular price from any introductory promotion.
- Read the change and cancellation rules. Confirm the deadline for the next order and the steps to skip or stop deliveries before subscribing.
What published testing can—and cannot—tell you
Food Network’s August 19, 2026 picks, Fortune’s 2026 comparison, Bon Appétit’s July 22, 2026 prepared-meal review, and NBC Select’s August 27, 2026 prepared-meal roundup are editorial assessments from those outlets. They can help identify services to investigate, but they do not establish this publisher’s firsthand testing, your local availability, or the terms shown at your checkout. Treat dated prices and category recommendations as starting points, then verify the specific order you intend to place.
