The difference from 2023 is striking in scale: the two 2026 failures had about $549.1 million in combined assets, while five banks that failed in 2023 had $532.2 billion. The 2026 total is a calculation from the FDIC’s rounded estimates; the figures for the two years use different reporting bases.
Did six U.S. banks fail in 2026?
No. The FDIC’s 2026 in-brief summary lists two failures in its latest available entries: Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust and Community Bank and Trust – West Georgia. The FDIC’s BankFind failure records also show those two 2026 institutions. The headline figure of six is not supported by these official records.
The count can change as the year progresses. The FDIC’s Failed Bank List and BankFind database are the official places to check for later additions.
Which banks failed in 2026?
| Bank | Closure date and location | Approximate assets | Approximate deposits | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust | January 30, 2026; Chicago, Illinois | $261.1 million | $212.1 million | First Independence Bank of Detroit assumed substantially all deposits and assets. |
| Community Bank and Trust – West Georgia | May 1, 2026; LaGrange, Georgia | $288.0 million | $268.0 million | Anchor Bank of Palm Beach Gardens assumed substantially all insured deposits and certain assets. |
The amounts and resolution descriptions are from the FDIC’s 2026 summary. Its figures for these banks are approximate press-release amounts. Adding the two rounded entries gives about $549.1 million in assets and $480.1 million in deposits; those combined amounts are calculations, not a separate FDIC-published annual total.

How does 2026 compare with 2023?
| Period | FDIC-listed failures | Failed-bank assets | Deposits | Measurement basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026, latest FDIC summary available | 2 | About $549.1 million | About $480.1 million | Calculated by adding approximate figures rounded in FDIC press releases. |
| Calendar 2023 | 5 | $532.2 billion | $440.6 billion | Values from the last quarterly Call Report filed before each failure. |
The 2023 counts and aggregate figures come from the FDIC’s 2023 Annual Report. The comparison is not perfectly like-for-like: the 2023 totals use pre-failure Call Report values, while the 2026 entries are approximate amounts from press releases, as reflected in the FDIC’s year summary. Still, the gap in reported asset scale is enormous: the 2023 aggregate was more than a thousand times the simple 2026 total.
Why the number of failures does not tell the whole story
A failure count treats every institution as one event, regardless of size. Two relatively small banks can therefore produce a far smaller aggregate asset figure than a year with more failures but institutions whose combined balance sheets are much larger. In 2023, five failures represented $532.2 billion in assets; the two listed failures in 2026 amount to approximately $549.1 million using the FDIC’s rounded press-release figures.

Neither the count nor the aggregate assets alone establish whether the broader U.S. banking system is safe or unsafe. These figures describe failed institutions and do not, by themselves, measure the condition of every bank or the risk to any particular depositor.

When a bank closes, the FDIC arranges a resolution. In the two 2026 cases, other banks took on deposits under the terms described in the FDIC summary. That transaction does not mean the failed bank’s holding company or its shareholders were acquired as part of the resolution; the FDIC’s Community Bank and Trust – West Georgia page specifically says its holding company was not involved.

Whether a depositor’s funds are protected depends on applicable FDIC insurance limits and how accounts are owned and categorized. The resolution descriptions are not a blanket statement that every depositor, account, or balance is insured. Depositors should check their account ownership and balances against FDIC insurance rules rather than infer coverage from the acquiring-bank announcement.
