I Opened a High-Yield Savings Account on My Phone. It Took 8 Minutes

One phone application took eight minutes, but timing varies. Here’s what to prepare, what can slow verification, and which savings-account terms to compare.

I completed one high-yield savings account application on my phone in eight minutes. That is my experience—not a typical-time benchmark or a promise that another application will take the same amount of time. A bank may verify your identity, request follow-up, or impose funding requirements that extend the process.

To make a mobile application go smoothly, have your identity and contact details ready, know how you plan to fund the account, and check the account’s current rate and terms before you start.

What to have ready before you apply

The FDIC says an online or mobile application may ask for your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, date of birth, and address. It may also ask questions based on public records to verify your identity. Review the FDIC’s guide to opening a bank account for the general process.

  • Identity details: Have your SSN or ITIN, date of birth, and current address available.
  • A funding source: Decide which accepted method you intend to use, such as a transfer from another account. The available methods and any required opening deposit depend on the bank.
  • Time for possible follow-up: Electronic identity checks do not always clear automatically. Recent moves or difficulty verifying an address can lead to additional review.

Why one application can take eight minutes—and another cannot

A mobile application can be quick when the form is straightforward and identity checks succeed. But the time spent entering information is only one part of opening an account: verification, any requested follow-up, funding, and activating online or mobile access can add steps. If electronic verification fails, the FDIC says the bank may ask you to call or visit a branch, and some applicants may not be able to complete the process entirely online.

Providers sometimes describe their own process as taking minutes. For example, Marcus by Goldman Sachs says, “A Marcus high-yield savings account takes just minutes to open online.” That is the provider’s description, not an independent study of how long customers typically take. My eight-minute experience likewise describes one application, not a guarantee for yours.

Also distinguish account opening from money being available to use. A completed application does not necessarily mean a transfer has settled or the account is fully activated. Check the bank’s instructions for funding and any follow-up steps.

Compare the terms before choosing an account

A high advertised APY is only one part of the decision. Rates can change, and minimums, fees, eligibility, funding options, and access rules differ. These examples from official U.S. provider pages were current on the dates shown; they are not a ranked or comprehensive market survey. Recheck the provider’s page and disclosures before applying.

Account Published rate and date Opening and balance conditions Other relevant terms
Marcus by Goldman Sachs 3.50% APY as of October 2, 2026; the rate may change. No minimum deposit listed. No fees listed. The page describes same-day transfers of $100,000 or less and says accounts can be opened online or in the app. Official product page.
TAB Save 3.95% APY, effective September 27, 2026; rates can change. $0 opening minimum; a $0.01 minimum balance is required to earn APY. Fees may reduce earnings. Official product page.
EagleBank High-Yield Savings 4.00% APY, accurate September 24, 2026; variable and subject to change without notice. $1,000 minimum opening deposit. Review the bank’s full account terms before applying. Official product page.
BrioDirect High-Yield Savings The page’s disclosed APY was accurate October 2, 2026 and may change. $5,000 minimum opening deposit and $25 minimum balance to earn the disclosed APY. BrioDirect identifies deposits as Santander Bank deposits. Official product page.

Use the date attached to each APY, not just the headline number. Also check whether the rate is variable or promotional, whether fees could offset interest, who can apply, what funding and withdrawal methods are available, and what balance is needed to earn the displayed rate. The figures above are snapshots, not a forecast of what any account will pay after you open it.

Check the bank behind the brand and deposit insurance

Confirm which FDIC-insured bank holds the deposits rather than assuming the product’s brand name is a separate bank. The standard FDIC insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. The bank and ownership category matter: deposits you hold under the same ownership category at the same insured bank may count together toward the limit.

For example, BrioDirect says its deposits are Santander Bank deposits, and Openbank’s disclosures say deposits at Openbank and Santander Bank are combined for insurance-limit purposes. Read the account agreement and check applicable information from the FDIC to understand how your accounts are treated.

A practical order for applying on your phone

  1. Choose the account using current disclosures. Check its APY date, variable-rate terms, fees, opening deposit, and minimum balance needed to earn the rate.
  2. Verify eligibility and the bank. Read who may apply, identify the institution holding the deposits, and consider how your existing deposits there count toward insurance limits.
  3. Gather identity details and a funding source. Have your SSN or ITIN, date of birth, address, and intended funding method ready.
  4. Complete the application and respond to verification requests. If online checks cannot verify you, follow the bank’s instructions for additional review; a call or branch visit may be needed.
  5. Fund and activate the account. Follow the provider’s deposit instructions and complete any required activation for online or mobile access.

Finishing the form quickly is useful, but it is not the whole measure of a good account-opening experience. The rate conditions, access to your money, and the identity of the insured bank deserve a careful check before you submit.
