Blue Bird (BLBD) After the Pullback: Is the Stock Still a Bargain?

Blue Bird raised fiscal 2026 guidance, but its low trailing P/E includes a large Micro Bird remeasurement gain. Here are the operating and valuation questions behind the pullback.

Short answer: Blue Bird’s shares may look inexpensive on headline earnings multiples, but those figures overstate the company’s ordinary earnings because trailing results include a large, noncash gain tied to the Micro Bird acquisition. The operating business also has strengths: Blue Bird raised fiscal 2026 guidance and reported solid adjusted EBITDA. Yet weaker bookings at its legacy business, acquisition integration, tariffs and delivery timing make the bargain case conditional—not established by the pullback alone.

What Blue Bird’s latest results show

Blue Bird Corporation (NASDAQ: BLBD) makes school buses and related parts. Its latest located results are for fiscal third quarter 2026, the quarter ended June 27, released August 5, 2026. The company reported revenue of $517.2 million, GAAP net income of $185.3 million, adjusted EBITDA of $71.4 million, and 3,525 buses sold. Micro Bird, of which Blue Bird acquired the remaining 50% effective April 1, contributed $122.9 million of Q3 revenue. Blue Bird’s Form 10-Q and Q3 earnings release provide the company’s detailed figures.

Why the reported profit needs context

Q3 GAAP net income included a $160.5 million gain from remeasuring Blue Bird’s previously held Micro Bird investment at fair value when the company acquired the remaining interest. Blue Bird says this gain is not indicative of normal earnings activity. It is a noncash accounting gain, not recurring operating profit, so the quarter’s $185.3 million net income and $5.27 diluted EPS should not be treated as a normal run rate or annualized.

Blue Bird also reported adjusted net income of $45.0 million and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.28. These company-defined non-GAAP measures offer a different view, but adjustments should not automatically be assumed irrelevant: acquisition costs and a pension settlement loss also affected other income and expense. Investors should understand what is removed before using adjusted figures as a proxy for sustainable earnings.

Adjusted EBITDA was strong, but growth is not purely organic

Q3 adjusted EBITDA was $71.4 million, equal to 13.8% of sales, compared with $58.5 million and a 14.7% margin in the prior-year quarter. Micro Bird contributed $16.5 million. Blue Bird reported that adjusted EBITDA for its legacy business declined by $3.6 million year over year. The comparison therefore combines acquired results with a weaker contribution from the legacy operation; consolidated growth alone does not show how the original business is performing.

What is supporting the bullish case?

Management raised fiscal 2026 guidance

On August 5, 2026, management raised its fiscal 2026 outlook to approximately $1.75 billion in net revenue and approximately $247 million in adjusted EBITDA. Those are forecasts, not achieved results or guarantees. The investment case improves if Blue Bird converts this outlook into reported sales, durable margins, and cash generation.

The longer-term target is ambitious

Management also described a 2030-or-later outlook of at least $3.3 billion in revenue and $500 million or more in adjusted EBITDA, with a margin of 15% or greater. The company says this outlook reflects its expanded Ford collaboration and acquisition of Detroit Assembly Plant assets, as well as the Micro Bird acquisition. It is a management projection whose credibility depends on execution, integration, and the economics of the expanded business—not a current earnings base.

What could undermine the bargain thesis?

Legacy bookings are down despite higher prices

In Q3, legacy Blue Bird bookings were 2,290 units versus 2,467 a year earlier, a 7.2% decline. Average selling price per unit rose 6.7%, while legacy bus sales fell $3.5 million, or 0.9%. For the first nine months, legacy bookings were 6,573 versus 6,892, down 4.6%, while average selling price increased 5.7%. Higher prices help offset lower volumes and costs, but they do not by themselves establish that demand or legacy profitability is strengthening.

Costs and tariffs remain a variable

Blue Bird’s filing attributes higher per-unit manufacturing costs to inflation in raw materials, tariffs that began affecting costs in the second half of fiscal 2025, and supply-chain disruption that raised component purchase costs. The company said pricing actions more than offset these factors in legacy cost of goods sold as a share of sales in Q3. That reported result is encouraging, but future tariff, component, wage, and supply conditions can change and may pressure margins.

Inventory needs to convert into deliveries

Blue Bird said it built units for certain customers that it expected to deliver in fiscal Q4 to align with school resumption. The company linked this timing to a significant increase in finished-goods inventory at June 27. That explanation is relevant, but it is not proof that every unit will be delivered, recognized as revenue, and converted to cash on schedule. Subsequent results should show whether the inventory build unwound as intended.

Acquisition integration and cash conversion matter

Micro Bird adds revenue and adjusted EBITDA, but the consolidated figures now include an acquired business while legacy bookings and adjusted EBITDA were weaker year over year. Investors assessing the purchase and long-range outlook should track realized margins, integration, capital requirements, and working-capital needs. A full cash-flow, debt, or enterprise-value analysis is not established by the earnings figures alone; those questions require reviewing the company’s financial statements rather than treating accounting earnings as cash available to shareholders.

Does BLBD look cheap after the pullback?

At the October 2, 2026 close, Stock Analysis reported a BLBD share price of $56.53, market capitalization of $1.79 billion, trailing P/E of 6.66, and forward P/E of 12.90. These are dated secondary-source figures, not a live quote; prices and provider calculations can change. Stock Analysis’ BLBD statistics is the source for this snapshot.

The trailing P/E is particularly easy to misread because trailing earnings include the $160.5 million Micro Bird remeasurement gain. It should not be read as the multiple on a normal year of recurring profit. The forward P/E avoids that specific trailing-period distortion, but it depends on external earnings estimates and does not establish that the shares are undervalued. Neither multiple, on its own, tells an investor how much future cash flow the current price represents.

Valuation lens What it helps assess What to watch for BLBD
Normalized earnings Whether recurring earnings support the share price. Separate ordinary operations from the Micro Bird remeasurement gain and scrutinize other adjustments.
Organic versus acquired growth Whether the existing business is improving, apart from acquisitions. Compare legacy bookings, pricing, and adjusted EBITDA with consolidated results that include Micro Bird.
Execution against guidance Whether projected results are being delivered. Check fiscal 2026 revenue and adjusted EBITDA against management’s outlook as results arrive.
Margins and costs How resilient profitability is to inflation and operating pressure. Track pricing against tariffs, component costs, wages, and supply-chain conditions.
Cash and balance sheet Whether accounting earnings translate into financial capacity. Review cash flow, debt, working capital, and acquisition funding in current filings; the cited valuation snapshot does not settle these measures.

How to judge the thesis from here

The pullback can create an opportunity if Blue Bird’s normalized earnings and cash generation support the price and the company delivers on guidance. The key evidence is not simply a low reported P/E: it is whether legacy demand stabilizes, margins hold up, Micro Bird integrates effectively, and inventory converts into timely deliveries and cash. Until those items are clearer, the stock is better described as a company with credible growth potential and meaningful execution risks than as a proven bargain.
