Waste Connections’ operating outlook improved in 2026, while its shares showed weak momentum at the October 2 close. That combination strengthens the business case but does not establish that WCN is undervalued or poised to rebound. The decision still turns on whether the company can deliver its raised outlook and whether the share price reasonably reflects the cash flows and risks ahead.
What changed in Waste Connections’ operating outlook?
Waste Connections reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $2.562 billion, up 6.4% year over year. Adjusted EBITDA was $840.1 million, up 6.8%, and adjusted EBITDA margin was 32.8%. These are company-reported results in its July 22, 2026 earnings release.
The company raised its full-year 2026 outlook to:
- Revenue of $10.02 billion to $10.05 billion.
- Adjusted EBITDA of $3.33 billion to $3.34 billion.
- Adjusted free cash flow of $1.40 billion to $1.45 billion.
Management attributed the higher outlook to operational execution, recent commodity values, ongoing fuel-cost recovery, and contributions from acquisitions closed to date. The company said the outlook assumes no change in the current economic environment and cautioned that actual results may differ materially. Commodity prices and costs can move, while acquisitions also bring integration and financing demands.
These figures support a stronger fundamental picture, but they are guidance rather than guaranteed results. Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow are non-GAAP measures; investors assessing cash available to shareholders should also examine the company’s reconciliations and full financial statements.

Are analysts’ estimates and ratings improving?
Third-party estimate and rating pages show an optimistic direction, though they are not company guidance and their methods differ.
| Indicator | Reported change or snapshot | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Forecast display | Stock Analysis displayed current-year EPS estimates moving from $5.15 to $5.64 and revenue estimates from $9.47 billion to $10.04 billion, observed October 3, 2026 (Stock Analysis). | These are vendor-displayed estimate changes. The page excerpt does not establish the consensus window or analyst set, so they should not be treated as definitive consensus or company guidance. |
| Analyst actions | Benzinga reported UBS upgraded WCN from Neutral to Buy and raised its target to $200 on September 18; Wolfe Research initiated coverage at Outperform with a $204 target on September 15 (Benzinga). | These are dated third-party opinions, not promised share prices. |
| Broker ratings | Earnings Whispers reported 23 Buy, 3 Hold, and 0 Sell ratings among 26 brokers covering WCN as of October 1, 2026 (Earnings Whispers). | The distribution indicates broadly positive sentiment, but consensus can lag price moves and is not an independent guarantee. |
Higher estimates and favorable analyst actions can reinforce confidence in the outlook. They can also mean expectations are already optimistic. Targets and ratings should be treated as inputs to an investment thesis, not substitutes for testing the company’s likely cash generation against its market price.

What does the oversold signal say—and what does it not say?
At the October 2, 2026 close, AlgovestIQ reported WCN at $153.82, with a 14-day relative strength index (RSI) of 28.03. The same snapshot put the 50-day simple moving average at $163.04 and the 200-day average at $163.99 (AlgovestIQ).
An RSI below the commonly used 30 threshold is often described as “oversold.” The share price was also below both moving averages in that dated snapshot, indicating recent weakness. Neither observation proves that shares are cheap or that a rebound is due: an oversold reading can persist, and moving averages describe past prices rather than intrinsic value. These technical measures can change quickly with new trading sessions.

How to weigh the stronger outlook against weak momentum
The evidence points in two directions: the company raised its outlook after reporting growth, while the share-price snapshot reflected recent weakness. A practical assessment separates business performance from valuation and timing.
- Test delivery: Compare later reported results with the raised revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and adjusted free cash flow ranges. Look at whether margin and cash generation support the earnings story.
- Examine the drivers: Management cited execution, commodity trends, fuel-cost recovery, and acquisitions. Consider how changes in those factors, as well as integration and financing demands, could affect the outlook.
- Check what expectations imply: Estimate revisions and a heavily Buy-weighted broker mix may signal confidence, but they also raise the question of how much optimism is already reflected in the share price.
- Value the shares independently: The available evidence does not establish fair value or show that WCN is cheap. A valuation needs explicit assumptions about growth, margins, capital spending, free cash flow, leverage, and returns on acquisitions.
- Keep the technical signal in its lane: RSI and moving averages may help describe recent price behavior; they do not answer whether the business is worth its current market price.
What could investors watch next?
Waste Connections’ investor-relations events page listed the Q3 2026 earnings call for October 22, 2026 (company events and presentations). At the October 3, 2026 information cutoff, that call was still upcoming. It could provide evidence on operating performance and whether management’s outlook remains achievable; it is a future catalyst, not evidence of an outcome.

For a decision, investors can use the call and subsequent filings to compare actual results with guidance, assess cash generation and acquisition contributions, and revisit their valuation assumptions. No post-October 2 rebound or Q3 result is established by the information available here.

It makes the operating case more constructive, not conclusive. Raised company guidance and improving third-party estimates support the possibility of stronger performance. The oversold reading captures price weakness, not a discount to intrinsic value, while positive analyst sentiment is not a guarantee. Whether WCN fits an individual portfolio depends on the price paid, the investor’s assumptions and risk tolerance, and whether later results validate the outlook.
