Casus Underwriting managing director Stewart Croker says brokers should come to Broker Expo 2026 ready to discuss real construction risks, while leaving room for unexpected conversations. In this countdown Q&A, he explains why knowing an insurer’s appetite still matters, where he sees AI helping, and why he believes sound risk judgement and relationships remain central to broking.

What will Casus Underwriting bring to Broker Expo 2026?

Croker says Casus is focused on construction and sees the Expo as a chance to hear what opportunities brokers are encountering and discuss how the underwriting business might help them place more construction business. He invites brokers to bring actual risks and questions so they can talk through Casus’s appetite, approach and where it may add value. These are Croker’s comments about Casus, not a published list of binding underwriting criteria.

How should brokers make the most of the Expo?

“Have a plan, but don’t overplan it,” Croker advises. He recommends knowing whom you want to meet and bringing specific risks or opportunities to discuss, while keeping time available for conversations that arise unexpectedly. He also urges attendees to talk to people rather than spend the event standing aside and answering email.

Which word does Croker expect to hear most?

He expects AI to attract attention, but predicts that “appetite” will remain an important word. Brokers need to know which underwriters are willing to consider a particular risk and how to reach the right person quickly, he says. “For brokers, knowing who genuinely wants to look at a risk, and being able to get to the right person quickly, remains incredibly valuable.”

What insurance innovation has impressed him?

Croker points to practical uses of AI and automation, particularly reducing repetitive administration and improving how information is captured and presented. In his view, technology should support the work rather than replace the parts that call for understanding a risk, exercising judgement and building relationships. His comments describe his assessment of emerging uses; the interview does not quantify adoption across the market.

What advice does he have for new broking professionals?

“Learn how to understand a risk, not just how to process one,” Croker says. He recommends asking good questions, understanding what the client needs, and explaining the risk clearly to an underwriter. He also stresses relationship-building as a core part of the job.

Who, in Croker’s view, has played a blinder?

He names independent brokers collectively, pointing to their client knowledge, advice and insurer relationships as valuable amid changing market conditions. This is Croker’s assessment, not an independently measured comparison with other parts of the market.

What does he expect for clients in 2027?

Croker expects clients to continue needing advice as their businesses and risks become more complex. He sees technology as a way to improve efficiency, not as a substitute for the value of good advice. “Insurance is still very much a people business,” he says.
