Natural Gas Storage: Latest Inventory, Forecasts and Winter Price Context

EIA estimated 3,415 Bcf of Lower 48 working gas in storage for September 25, 2026. Stocks were above the five-year average but below year-ago levels; a forecast beat is unverified.

The latest U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) report estimated 3,415 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of working natural gas in Lower 48 underground storage for the week ending September 25, 2026. The report confirms the inventory and weekly injection, but it does not establish that storage surpassed a market forecast: no same-week consensus estimate is cited. Stocks were above the five-year average and below year-ago levels.

How much natural gas is in storage?

EIA’s report, released October 1, 2026, put Lower 48 working gas at 3,415 Bcf for the week ending September 25. Utilities and other market participants use underground storage to help balance supply and demand, particularly when winter heating raises consumption. EIA’s weekly report provides the national estimate and regional detail: EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report.

Storage rose by 64 Bcf that week. A weekly injection is the amount added to inventories over the reporting period; it is not the total stock level. A large build can add to the available seasonal cushion, but its market significance depends on how it compares with expectations and historical patterns.

Did natural gas storage surpass forecasts?

That claim is not verified by the reported actual alone. EIA reported the 64 Bcf injection, but its weekly release does not provide a market-consensus forecast for the same week. Without a comparable estimate attributed to analysts or another identifiable source, it is not possible to say from these figures whether the result beat expectations or by how much.

Traders may treat a build larger than expected as a bearish surprise in the immediate market discussion because more gas entered storage than anticipated. That interpretation requires a valid same-week comparison; it should not be presented as a measured price effect or as a confirmed forecast beat here.

Are inventories above the five-year average?

Yes, nationally, but they remain below the year-ago level. The American Gas Association (AGA), summarizing the October 1 EIA report, put total stocks 2.4% above the five-year average and nearly 4% below the level a year earlier. These comparisons answer different questions: the five-year average offers a historical benchmark, while the year-ago comparison shows how current stocks compare with the same point in the prior year. AGA also reported that weekly injections had been below the five-year-average build for seven consecutive weeks.

What does the end-of-season outlook say?

EIA’s September 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook projected 3,969 Bcf in storage on October 31. That forecast was 5% above the 2021–2025 average and 1% above October 2025. It is a dated projection, not a later observed inventory result. See the EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook for the agency’s outlook.

An earlier EIA forecast, published in August, projected 3,985 Bcf in October and described that level as the most gas in inventories ahead of winter since 2016. The September outlook is newer and should be used for the current end-of-injection-season projection. In its August 11, 2026 press release, EIA Administrator Tristan Abbey said, “More natural gas in inventories in the fall season provides a cushion for increased heating-related consumption during the winter.” EIA cited increased production and reduced LNG feedgas demand associated with facility maintenance as drivers of its August outlook; those explanations apply to that forecast, not necessarily to every weekly inventory change. Why national stocks do not tell the whole story

A national total can look comfortable against a historical benchmark even when a particular region or storage type is comparatively tight. In its October 1 summary, AGA reported that South Central salt storage was 15.5% below its five-year average and 27.3% below year-ago levels. Those figures are AGA’s regional and storage-type comparisons, not national EIA totals.

That regional deficit and EIA’s forecast of above-average national stocks are not contradictory: one describes a specific part of the storage system at the reporting date, while the other projects the national total for October 31. For a fuller picture, read the national level alongside regional estimates, the pace of weekly builds, and the forecast horizon.

What storage may mean for winter gas prices

Storage is one input into the winter supply outlook, not a standalone price signal. Above-average national stocks can provide a buffer for heating demand, while regional imbalances may matter where gas must be delivered. Prices also respond to supply, consumption, weather, pipeline constraints, LNG demand, and expectations about future conditions. The figures here establish inventory comparisons and an EIA projection; they do not establish that storage caused a particular price movement or predict where prices will go.

  • For the immediate weekly market reaction, compare the injection with a same-week consensus estimate from an attributable source.
  • For the seasonal cushion, compare total working gas with the five-year average and the dated EIA outlook.
  • For local tightness, check EIA’s regional tables and distinguish storage types rather than relying on the national total alone.

When is the next storage report?

The October 1 EIA report listed October 8, 2026 as the next release date. EIA schedules can change, so consult the weekly report page for the latest release and regional tables.
