IBM does not publish one context-free value that applies to every reference to “IBM logo blue.” IBM’s third-party logo PDF identifies its Blue 60 swatch as PMS 2132, RGB 15, 98, 254, and CMYK 80, 60, 0, 0. Separately, IBM History identifies PMS 2718C as the Pantone reference for the core color it calls “IBM Blue.” Those are distinct references in different IBM materials; the sources do not reconcile them or establish a hex code for the specific logo sample.
IBM logo blue color codes
For the specific Blue 60 swatch in IBM’s Logo and Brand Guidelines for Third Parties, use the values shown in that document:
| IBM source and reference | Named color | Pantone | RGB | CMYK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBM third-party logo PDF | Blue 60 | PMS 2132 | 15, 98, 254 | 80, 60, 0, 0 |
| IBM History, “The IBM logo” | “IBM Blue” | PMS 2718C | not stated (IBM History) | not stated (IBM History) |
IBM’s logo history page discusses PMS 2718C in connection with the 1972 eight-bar design. It is a separate corporate/history reference, not a correction to the PDF’s Blue 60 specification. The reviewed sources do not explain how the two Pantone references relate, so do not treat them as interchangeable or claim they are the same color.
A hex value for the specific IBM logo sample is not stated in these sources. RGB-to-hex conversion or online approximations may describe a digital representation, but they should not be presented as an IBM-published logo specification.

Which blue should you use?
If you need to describe or reproduce the Blue 60 sample in the third-party PDF, use its listed PMS, RGB, or CMYK values. For an actual IBM logo, use the applicable current IBM artwork and guidance rather than rebuilding the mark from a color code. IBM’s 8-Bar guidance defines approved logo color families, positive and reversed artwork, and contrast requirements.
IBM describes blue and gray families for coloring the eight-bar logo and says not to use colors outside those families. A strategic-partner guide gives more specific examples: positive black or Blue 60 on light-to-medium gray; reversed white on medium gray through black; and reversed Blue 50 on black only. These examples are guidance in that partner document, not a substitute for selecting the correct current asset and applicable rules.

Choose the correct logo version and background
IBM supplies positive and reversed versions for different backgrounds. They contain subtle differences, including stripe weight and the shape of counters, intended to preserve optical integrity. Use the supplied version suited to the background; do not simply invert or recolor one version yourself.
IBM’s 8-Bar guidance calls for at least five palette “steps” between the logo foreground and background. For photography, the strategic-partner guide recommends simple imagery with clear backgrounds and plenty of contrast. Avoid placing the mark over busy or low-contrast areas.

Keep the eight-bar mark intact
IBM credits Paul Rand with the design and says its basic eight-bar logo has remained unchanged since 1972. IBM’s usage guidance specifies clear space equal to the logo’s height. It also prohibits alterations such as stretching or compressing the mark, changing bar direction or weight, changing letter spacing, outlining it, putting it inside a shape, adding shadows or taglines, using gradients, or making stripes different colors.

Color specifications do not grant permission to use IBM’s logo. IBM’s Copyright and Trademark Information says another company may use IBM logos only with express written permission or an IBM license. IBM’s fair-use guidance is limited to truthful, non-misleading text-only references to trademarks and excludes logos.
Rank #4
IBM’s 8-Bar page separately says U.S. official communications require a registered trademark alongside one logo appearance and recommends local legal counsel for trademark guidance outside the United States. That narrow instruction should not be read as general permission for third-party logo use.
