TSMC’s Fab 22 Expansion Ceremony Signals Its Move Toward 2nm

TSMC’s Fab 22 ceremony was a reported expansion milestone in Kaohsiung, not proof of current 2nm production. Here’s what the company’s N2 roadmap says.

TSMC’s Fab 22 expansion ceremony in Kaohsiung marked progress on facilities intended to support its N2, or 2nm-class, process—but a construction milestone is not proof that the site is already producing chips at scale. An April 1, 2025 report by ExtremeTech described the ceremony; TSMC’s own materials explain the process and its production schedule, but do not verify Fab 22’s current output.

What happened at TSMC’s Fab 22?

ExtremeTech reported on April 1, 2025, that TSMC held an expansion ceremony at Fab 22, its site in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The report described Fab 22 as under construction and connected the project to TSMC’s preparations for N2 manufacturing. TSMC’s official materials cited below discuss N2 and the company’s roadmap, but do not independently confirm the ceremony or its event details.

The report also discussed possible wafer capacity, investment and employment, and speculated about potential early customers. It cited conflicting outside capacity estimates, so none should be treated as a settled figure. Its customer discussion is not confirmation of orders or allocations, and its investment and employment references should not be read as verified Fab 22 budget or headcount.

What does TSMC mean by “2nm” or N2?

N2 is TSMC’s name for a process generation commonly described as 2nm-class; the label is a generation name, not a claim that every transistor feature measures exactly two nanometers. In a 2022 announcement, TSMC said N2 would use nanosheet transistor architecture, a gate-all-around approach intended to improve performance and power efficiency.

TSMC’s 2022 comparison with N3 projected 10–15% greater speed at the same power, or 25–30% lower power at the same speed. Those are TSMC’s process-level comparisons, not independently measured results or a guarantee that every finished chip will achieve those improvements. The company’s announcement is available at TSMC’s N2 announcement.

When was N2 expected to enter production?

TSMC’s 2022 announcement said N2 production was scheduled to begin in 2025. In a 2025 customer newsletter, the company said volume production was on track for the second half of 2025. Both are company schedule statements. They do not independently establish that production began on schedule, or document Fab 22’s operating status.

As of October 3, 2026, the cited materials do not establish Fab 22’s production volume, yields, customer allocations, or current operating status. A ceremony, a planned start date, and verified high-volume manufacturing are different milestones; the available sources support the first two, not a plant-level production audit.

How does the Kaohsiung project fit TSMC’s wider expansion?

Fab 22 is part of the Taiwan story, but it was not TSMC’s only announced expansion plan. In an August 2025 newsletter, TSMC described US$165 billion in U.S. plans, including an Arizona cluster of six advanced wafer fabs, two advanced packaging fabs, and a major R&D center. Those were stated plans, not a tally of operating facilities. The announcement does not quantify a production tradeoff between Arizona and Taiwan or establish that the Kaohsiung ceremony signaled a shift away from Taiwan. See TSMC’s August 2025 newsletter.

TSMC also introduced A14 in April 2025 as a later process generation, with production planned for 2028. The company projected up to 15% more speed at the same power, up to 30% less power at the same speed, and more than 20% greater logic density compared with N2. These are TSMC’s projections for a planned process, not independently verified product results. A14’s announcement is at TSMC’s A14 announcement.

What the ceremony does—and does not—tell investors

For readers following the semiconductor industry or companies exposed to it, the ceremony is evidence of a reported construction and expansion milestone connected to TSMC’s next process generation. It does not, on its own, show that Fab 22 has reached volume production, disclose yields or customer commitments, or establish how much output it will contribute. The clearest reading is to separate facility progress from the company’s roadmap and from independently verified manufacturing results.
