No: Irish Rail does not currently offer a trolley on every train. Full trolley service runs on Dublin–Cork; Enterprise catering varies by departure; and a six-month pilot covers selected Dublin–Galway trains. The operator says it cannot provide catering on other Republic of Ireland intercity routes at present. The reason, in Irish Rail’s words, is that “the money isn’t there right now”—but that does not mean every route is without catering.
What catering is available on each route?
Availability depends on the route and, in some cases, the individual departure. Irish Rail’s current catering page is the place to check before travelling, particularly for routes with variable service.
| Route | What Irish Rail lists | Payment or coverage detail |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin–Cork | Full trolley service on every service in both directions | Card and cash accepted |
| Dublin–Galway | Trolley on selected trains for the full journey as part of a six-month pilot that began August 24, 2026 | Card only; not every departure is covered |
| Dublin–Belfast Enterprise | Depending on the departure: full catering, light-menu catering, or trolley-only service | Check the current table for the specific direction and day |
| Other Republic of Ireland intercity routes | Irish Rail says it cannot provide catering at present | Not stated by Irish Rail |
Which Dublin–Galway trains have a trolley?
The pilot provides trolley service on three departures each way daily at launch. These are the listed times; confirm them on Irish Rail’s catering page before your journey because pilot coverage and timetables can change.
Monday to Saturday
- From Dublin Heuston: 07:35, 09:25 and 11:30.
- From Galway: 11:05, 13:05 and 15:05.
Sunday
- From Dublin Heuston: 08:00, 10:30 and 11:40.
- From Galway: 11:00, 13:40 and 15:00.
The 07:35 Friday departure from Heuston involves a change at Athlone. The pilot is operated by Irish company Sambos.ie and accepts card only. Irish Rail said it may extend the trial to more services or routes during the six-month period; the announced launch coverage is not a guarantee that every Galway train has catering.

Why is the trolley service limited?
Irish Rail’s pilot announcement says catering on Dublin–Cork and Dublin–Belfast was provided within the Public Service Obligation (PSO) funding envelope available under its contract with the National Transport Authority. It describes the Galway service as a commercial arrangement without PSO funding, intended to test whether broader intercity catering could be commercially viable.
In an October 1, 2026 interview on The Claire Byrne Show, Iarnród Éireann Corporate Communications Manager Barry Kenny cited the previous operator’s inability to continue after COVID-era disruption, higher costs when catering was tendered, and limits on available NTA funding. The Podscan.fm transcript records him saying: “We want catering on all the trains, but the money isn’t there right now.” That is Kenny’s explanation of the funding and service constraints, not a published budget figure. The sources do not state the catering budget, tender-cost comparison, passenger-demand figure or break-even point.

What to do if your train has no trolley
- Check the exact departure on Irish Rail’s current catering page rather than assuming every train on a route has the same service.
- For Enterprise, look for whether that specific service is listed as full catering, light-menu catering or trolley-only.
- Bring food or a drink if you need something during the journey and your departure is not listed with catering.
- Irish Rail lists free water refill stations at a number of stations. A reusable bottle can be useful, but station refills are not a substitute for food or drink service onboard.
