Oracle says it plans to start deploying 50,000 AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in calendar Q3 2026. The GPUs are intended for a publicly available AI supercluster, but the October 14, 2025 announcement does not confirm that deployment is complete, when customers in particular regions can use it, or what it will cost.
What are Oracle’s 50,000 AMD chips?
They are AMD Instinct MI450 Series graphics processing units (GPUs), specialized accelerators for AI workloads—not consumer graphics cards. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is to be a launch partner for a publicly available AI supercluster using the GPUs. AMD announced an initial deployment of 50,000 GPUs, with expansion planned in 2027 and beyond.
The number describes the planned initial deployment, not a confirmed count already operating or available for customers to rent. AMD’s October 14, 2025 release also says product direction and timing may change.
When will OCI offer MI450 GPUs?
The announced target for the initial deployment is calendar Q3 2026. That is a planned start, not a confirmed date for general customer access. The release does not specify customer reservation dates, final regional availability, or how quickly the initial deployment will be brought online.

AMD says Oracle had already launched OCI shapes using MI300X GPUs in 2024 and that OCI Compute using MI355X GPUs is generally available in its zettascale OCI Supercluster. AMD says that MI355X system can scale to 131,072 GPUs. The MI450 plan is a later step in this hardware roadmap:
| OCI accelerator offering | Status or timing stated by AMD | Scale stated by AMD |
|---|---|---|
| MI300X | OCI launched MI300X-powered shapes in 2024 | Not stated in AMD’s October 14, 2025 release |
| MI355X | OCI Compute with MI355X GPUs is generally available, according to AMD | Up to 131,072 GPUs in the OCI Supercluster, according to AMD |
| MI450 | Initial deployment planned to begin in calendar Q3 2026; expansion planned for 2027 and beyond | 50,000 GPUs in the initial deployment; later expansion amount not stated |
These are statements in AMD’s October 14, 2025 release; it does not provide a deployment-completion report or independently verified performance results.

What is AMD Helios, and what is planned for the cluster?
Helios is AMD’s rack design for the planned supercluster. AMD describes dense, liquid-cooled racks containing 72 MI450 GPUs apiece, combined with next-generation EPYC CPUs codenamed “Venice” and next-generation Pensando networking codenamed “Vulcano.” The release does not state how many racks Oracle will deploy for the initial 50,000 GPUs.
GPU memory and bandwidth
AMD lists up to 432 GB of HBM4 memory and 20 TB/s of memory bandwidth per MI450 GPU. The company says the capacity is intended to let customers train and run models 50 percent larger than those of previous generations entirely in memory. These are AMD specifications and a vendor claim; the announcement supplies no independent benchmark demonstrating that outcome for a particular model or workload.

Networking and software
The announced design includes up to three 800 Gbps Pensando Vulcano AI-NICs per GPU and UALink/UALoE connectivity. AMD also cites support for its open-source ROCm software, GPU partitioning and virtualization. The release describes confidential-computing features in the future Venice EPYC CPUs; it does not provide detailed implementation or availability terms for those features.
Does this mean Oracle is moving away from Nvidia?
The announcement establishes that OCI plans another large-scale AI accelerator option and is deepening its relationship with AMD. It does not establish that Oracle is reducing its Nvidia purchases, replacing Nvidia hardware, or shifting a stated share of its cloud capacity away from Nvidia. No supplier-allocation figures are given.

For customers, the practical implication is an additional planned hardware platform to evaluate alongside other cloud options. Whether MI450 is a suitable alternative will depend on customer access, workload performance, software compatibility, geographic availability, and price once Oracle publishes those details. A large announced GPU count alone does not answer those questions.

Oracle and AMD did not publish MI450 instance prices in the October 14, 2025 announcement. It also does not state billing units, minimum commitments, network or storage charges, or whether customers will be able to rent individual GPUs, complete racks, or another configuration. The announced 50,000-GPU scale is not a price or a customer reservation figure.

When Oracle publishes commercial terms, compare the full cost for the intended workload—not just the GPU rate. Relevant variables will include how many accelerators a job needs, how long it runs, data movement, storage, and any software or support charges. The announcement provides no figures to calculate those costs now.
Quick Recap
What should enterprise cloud buyers check before choosing it?
- Access and timing: Confirm actual customer availability rather than relying on the planned Q3 2026 deployment start.
- Location: Check which OCI regions offer the service and whether capacity is available where data residency or latency requirements dictate.
- Software fit: Test the workload’s dependencies and ROCm compatibility; support for ROCm does not by itself establish that every model, framework, or tool will run unchanged.
- Performance evidence: Seek results for the relevant model and configuration. AMD’s memory and bandwidth figures and its model-size comparison are not independent workload benchmarks.
- Total cost and terms: Wait for Oracle’s pricing, capacity, and service terms before comparing costs with other cloud platforms.
