Microsoft Store Movie Purchases Ended: What Happens to Yours?

Microsoft stopped selling and renting new movies and TV shows through Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox on July 18, 2025. If you already bought titles, Microsoft says you can keep watching them in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows; Windows downloads remain available in HD maximum resolution. There is no direct transfer to another service, and Microsoft says these purchases are not refundable under its Store Terms of Sale.

What changed, and when?

Microsoft ended new entertainment-content purchases and rentals through its website, Windows Store, and Xbox Store. The change took effect July 18, 2025, according to Tom’s Guide and PC Gamer. Microsoft’s Movies & TV app FAQ confirms that it no longer offers new movies or TV shows for purchase on those storefronts.

Can you still watch movies and shows you bought?

Yes. Microsoft says previously purchased movies and TV shows remain playable through the Microsoft Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows. On Windows, downloads also remain available, with HD as the maximum resolution specified by Microsoft. Xbox users can still play personal videos.

Can you transfer your Microsoft purchases or get a refund?

Transfers

Microsoft says purchased content cannot be directly moved to another service. Tom’s Guide reports that eligible U.S. customers may be able to synchronize some purchased movies through Movies Anywhere, but availability depends on the title, studio, and region. This is not a direct transfer of a Microsoft library, and it does not apply to every purchase.

Refunds

Microsoft’s FAQ says movies and TV shows are ineligible for refunds under the Microsoft Store Terms of Sale. Its Store returns policy also says digital goods, including movies and TV shows, are not eligible for return unless applicable law provides otherwise. If you believe a particular transaction is covered by local law, check the applicable terms for your region.

Where can you buy movies on Xbox or Windows now?

Microsoft names Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home as alternatives for current home-entertainment releases on Xbox and Windows. Their catalogs, rental and purchase options, device support, offline features, prices, and regional availability differ and can change, so check the service and title before paying. Microsoft’s recommendation does not mean a title bought from Microsoft will appear in another provider’s library.

Before choosing a service, check whether it supports the device you use, whether the title is available to rent or buy in your region, and whether downloads or cross-service synchronization apply to that specific film. Do not assume a purchase grants unrestricted ownership or that it will transfer between platforms.
