RTX says its Raytheon business secured a five-year SM-6 missile agreement worth up to $24.4 billion, with two additional option years. That is the announced contract ceiling—not confirmation that the full amount has been obligated or will be spent. The company says the agreement is intended to increase missile availability, but it did not disclose a production quantity or delivery schedule. The often-repeated speed figure of 2,660 mph is not confirmed by the official sources cited here; the Royal Australian Navy describes the SM-6 as traveling at greater than Mach 3.

What did Raytheon win?

RTX announced on October 1, 2026, that its Raytheon business secured a five-year agreement for the Standard Missile-6 (SM-6), valued at up to $24.4 billion, with two additional option years. RTX characterized the agreement as a way to secure a consistent supply for the U.S. Navy and increase SM-6 availability. RTX’s announcement does not disclose the full government contract instrument or say how much funding has actually been obligated.

The distinction matters: “up to” describes a ceiling, not a guaranteed payment. The announcement also does not state how many missiles the agreement covers, how many will be produced each year, or when deliveries are expected. Those details cannot be inferred from the headline value or the contract term.

What does the deal say about production?

RTX says it is working to expand production capacity through investments in facilities, workforce, supplier partnerships and factory automation. Raytheon President Phil Jasper said the company is focused on meeting customer demand, describing the SM-6’s multi-mission capability as vital to the Navy. These are the contractor’s statements about its production effort; the public announcement does not attach a unit target, a dated production ramp, or a delivery calendar to them.

A separate Navy budget reference helps explain the program’s broader procurement context but is not a quantity promised under this agreement. The FY2026 Navy budget planned for 139 SM-6 IA missiles and canisters in that fiscal year, under a separate multiyear procurement plan operating at maximum production rate. That budget figure is a plan for FY2026, not confirmation of deliveries and not the number of missiles covered by the October 2026 deal. The Navy’s FY2026 weapons budget distinguishes SM-6 IA from Block IB.

What is the SM-6 missile used for?

The SM-6 is a U.S. Navy guided missile designed for several mission types. RTX describes it as supporting air defense, anti-surface warfare and ballistic-missile defense, and says it has been launched from Navy ships and land-based launchers. RTX’s SM-6 overview presents the system’s capabilities at a program level; particular capabilities can vary by block or configuration.

The Pentagon’s Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) described additional operational contexts in its FY2022 report: fleet air defense, extended-range over-the-horizon anti-surface operations, overland air defense within an integrated fire-control concept, and sea-based terminal defense against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. The report distinguished Blocks I and IA from Block IB, which the Navy then planned to equip with a new second-stage rocket motor to extend engagement range. That is historical FY2022 planning information, not evidence of Block IB’s current schedule or delivery status. DOT&E’s FY2022 SM-6 report provides the test and program context.

How fast is an SM-6 missile?

The exact figure of 2,660 mph is not verified by the official sources cited here. The Royal Australian Navy lists the missile’s speed as “Greater than Mach 3”, without giving an exact miles-per-hour conversion. The Navy’s SM-6 specification is the more defensible formulation to quote. Mach is a ratio to the local speed of sound, so a conversion to mph depends on conditions; the source does not establish a fixed 2,660-mph speed.
