Nordic Semiconductor agreed in August 2023 to acquire Atlazo’s artificial-intelligence hardware intellectual property and employment agreements for its eight-person core team—not to announce a disclosed cash purchase of the entire startup. The transaction’s price was not made public. Nordic said regulatory approval was required and expected completion by the end of 2023.
What did Nordic agree to buy?
Nordic Semiconductor’s 15 August 2023 announcement described a deal for Atlazo’s IP portfolio and employment agreements with Atlazo’s eight-person core team. It did not disclose the amount or describe the arrangement as a purchase of the entire company. Nordic characterized it as a small bolt-on acquisition with strategic importance. Nordic’s announcement said regulatory approval was required; its Q3 2023 report also described approval as pending. Nordic’s Q3 report recorded the deal as an acquisition of key IP and the core team.
What is Atlazo’s AI hardware?
San Diego-based Atlazo developed AI/ML processors, sensor-interface designs and energy-management technology for small edge devices. The intended use case was always-on processing in battery-powered products such as true-wireless earbuds, hearing aids, wearables and health monitors. Rather than sending every sensor reading elsewhere for analysis, such hardware can support local processing within a device; the cited announcement describes the target applications, but does not provide product-level performance benchmarks or power figures for Atlazo technology.
Why did Nordic want the technology?
Nordic’s business centers on low-power wireless and IoT products. The Atlazo portfolio was intended to extend that roadmap with hyper-low-power AI/ML processing and health-oriented sensor technology. Nordic said it planned to incorporate Atlazo’s processor technology into future system-on-chips (SoCs) and combine it with sensor technologies for health applications. CEO Svenn-Tore Larsen said Nordic expected initial benefits within 12–18 months of closing; that was a forecast made in 2023, not a confirmed delivery schedule for a particular product.

Does the nRF54 use Atlazo technology?
Yes, Nordic later made a specific connection: its Q4 and preliminary full-year 2025 report says the nRF54LM20B SoC has an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) based on technology from the 2023 Atlazo acquisition. Nordic says the NPU enables AI tasks to run in milliseconds while using very little energy. That statement is about the nRF54LM20B; it does not establish that every nRF54-series chip includes the NPU or that all Atlazo technology is present in this device. Nordic’s Q4 and preliminary full-year 2025 report provides the product linkage.
