Instead, key assets and agreements were divested to the group’s management team, which formed an independent company called Atmosphere IoT Corp. The transaction closed on January 2, 2018, and was announced on January 24; its terms were not disclosed.
What happened to Anaren’s IoT Group?
The divestiture was part of Anaren’s previously announced sale to TTM Technologies for $775 million. Anaren and Atmosphere IoT said the IoT Group’s key assets and agreements went to its management team. The announcement does not describe the transaction as a sale of the entire Anaren business, nor does it disclose a separate price for the IoT assets. Anaren’s January 24, 2018 announcement said the divestiture had closed January 2.
So the clearest answer to “Who acquired Anaren Atmosphere?” is that the IoT Group’s management team received the key assets and agreements and formed Atmosphere IoT Corp. The available announcement does not name a separate outside buyer or disclose the transaction terms.
Who led Atmosphere IoT?
Former Anaren IoT Group president Jeff Liebl became Atmosphere IoT’s president and CEO. Former senior engineer Kieron Gillespie became CTO. Liebl said the new company could focus on developers and OEMs seeking wireless-enabled, cloud-connected products, with its core development team intact. Anaren CEO Larry Sala described the outcome as positive for the company and its IoT-related customers. The company announcement contains the leadership details and statements.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
What did Atmosphere IoT do?
Atmosphere IoT described its product as a cloud software platform for creating, deploying, and managing complete device-to-cloud solutions. Its stated audience was global developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) building wireless-enabled connected products. Trade publication IoT Now reported that the independent company intended to develop a web-based integrated development environment (IDE) supporting sensors, microcontrollers, mobile-app platforms, and cloud platforms. IoT Now’s January 24, 2018 coverage described that plan.
What did the platform support at the time?
Contemporaneous announcements provide a snapshot of the product’s historical scope, not confirmation of what Atmosphere IoT supports today.

- Certified & Future-Ready: Espressif-certified ESP32-WROOM-32E ensures full hardware compatibility and lifetime firmware support. Upgraded 8MB Flash handles IoT data and OTA updates.
- Dual-Core Speed: 240MHz dual-core processor runs Wi-Fi/BLE and sensors 2x faster. 38 GPIO pins (10 RTC) support SPI/I2C/UART for LCDs, motors, and industrial sensors.
- Plug & Play Dev: USB-C driver pre-installed: upload code instantly on Windows/Mac/Linux. Works with Arduino IDE, MicroPython, and Espressif IDF.
- All-Environment Ready: Run Wi-Fi smart switches (Home Assistant) and BLE tracking on one board. Industrial-grade stability (-40°C~85°C) for outdoor/automated systems.
- Advantages: The ESP32 development board offers high performance, low power consumption, and rich wireless connectivity, making it suitable for developers of all levels, especially beginners.
- Development environments and outputs: An August 2017 release for Atmosphere 2.1 described support for the BeagleBone Black Embedded Linux Development Kit and cloud-only projects that generated libraries for C#/.NET, C/C++, and Python. The release also said Anaren had more than 3,500 unique registered users at that time. Anaren’s Atmosphere 2.1 announcement is the source for those period-specific details.
- ST hardware ecosystem: An October 2017 announcement said Anaren’s IoT Group joined STMicroelectronics’ ST Partner Program and that Atmosphere supported ST microcontrollers and sensors. Anaren’s ST Partner Program announcement documents that integration.
The January 2018 divestiture announcement said Atmosphere IoT was used by thousands of developers and OEMs. That is a separate, differently worded historical company claim from Anaren’s August 2017 registered-user figure; neither should be treated as a current user count or combined into a single measure.
Why did Anaren spin off the IoT business?
The announcements establish that the divestiture accompanied Anaren’s sale to TTM Technologies and put the IoT Group’s assets and agreements in the hands of its management team. Liebl said Atmosphere IoT would be able to devote its efforts to serving developers and OEMs. They do not give a more detailed strategic rationale or disclose the financial terms, so claims about Anaren’s motives beyond that context are not established.

What is known about Atmosphere IoT now?
The available company announcements and trade coverage concern 2017 and 2018. They document the transaction, leadership at formation, product positioning, and selected historical integrations. They do not establish Atmosphere IoT’s ownership, operating status, product availability, or current capabilities in 2026. Treat the named hardware support and user figures as historical unless a newer authoritative source confirms them.
