Google Cloud’s $1 Million Cryptomining Protection: What It Covers

Google Cloud’s cryptomining protection is a discretionary credit program for eligible customers, not a $1 million cash payout or insurance policy.

Google Cloud’s Cryptomining Protection Program can provide eligible customers up to $1 million in Google Cloud credits for qualifying costs from an undetected, unauthorized cryptomining attack on supported Compute Engine instances. It is not a cash payout or insurance policy: Google decides whether a claim qualifies and how much credit to issue.

What does Google Cloud’s $1 million protection mean?

The $1 million figure is the maximum credit Google may issue to a customer in any 12-month period under the program’s terms. It is a cap, not a guaranteed payment. Any approved benefit is Google Cloud credit, and Google’s terms state that credits have no cash value.

The program is aimed at unexpected Compute Engine costs after an unauthorized cryptomining attack goes undetected. It does not make deliberate mining permissible: Google Support says customers must obtain Google’s prior written approval before engaging in cryptocurrency mining.

Who is eligible?

A customer must use Security Command Center (SCC) Premium or Enterprise, activate it across the full Google Cloud organization, and follow Google’s cryptomining detection best practices. Meeting those conditions is necessary, but Google retains discretion over whether credits are due and their amount.

The supported environment is limited to Linux-based Compute Engine instances covered by the Virtual Machine Threat Detection-supported environment. Google’s program does not cover Windows VMs, Confidential Compute VMs, Google Kubernetes instances, App Engine, Cloud Run, or Cloud Functions. Customer-initiated mining is also excluded.

What costs can qualify, and when does eligibility stop?

The program concerns qualifying costs from unauthorized mining that was not detected. Once Google produces a relevant detection finding or otherwise notifies the customer, costs incurred after that notification are not eligible. Attack response and remediation remain the customer’s responsibility, as Google’s terms make clear.

How do you request credits?

Google’s terms require a credit request within 30 days from when the attack began. A customer should be prepared to provide evidence supporting the claim, including logs, anomalous Compute Engine costs, and proof that the required detection practices were followed. Google evaluates the evidence and determines whether to issue credits and the amount.

  1. Identify the start of the attack. The 30-day filing window runs from when the attack began, not from when a bill arrives.
  2. Preserve evidence. Keep relevant logs, cost records showing anomalous Compute Engine charges, and records demonstrating compliance with the required practices.
  3. Submit the request within the deadline. File through the applicable Google Cloud support or program channel within 30 days of attack start.
  4. Respond to Google’s review. Google decides whether the incident and costs meet the terms. Continue incident response and remediation independently; the credits do not replace those responsibilities.

How do credits work after approval?

Credits are not cash and cannot be treated as reimbursement that can be withdrawn. They expire 12 months after issuance or when the customer’s Google Cloud agreement ends, whichever comes first. The overall program terms also allow Google to change or discontinue the program with 30 days’ notice.

Is this protection the same as cloud insurance?

No. The key distinctions are the form of benefit, the conditions that trigger it, and the limited workloads and deadlines:

Feature Google Cloud Cryptomining Protection Program
Benefit Google Cloud credits, not cash; credits have no cash value.
Trigger Qualifying costs caused by an undetected, unauthorized cryptomining attack.
Eligible workloads Supported Linux-based Compute Engine instances in the Virtual Machine Threat Detection-supported environment.
Prevention and detection obligations SCC Premium or Enterprise activated across the full organization, plus adherence to Google’s cryptomining detection best practices.
Claim deadline Request must be filed within 30 days from attack start.
After Google notification Costs incurred after a relevant finding or other notification are not eligible; response and remediation remain the customer’s responsibility.

Those restrictions mean the program should not be treated as a substitute for cyber insurance or for security controls. Google Cloud’s June 2023 launch post quoted IDC research manager Philip Bues describing cryptomining attacks as a continuing security and financial issue for organizations without suitable controls and detection. Separately, Google’s Cybersecurity Action Team reported in its September 2022 Threat Horizons Report, as quoted by Google Cloud in 2023, that 65% of compromised cloud accounts experienced cryptocurrency mining. That figure describes compromised accounts in the cited report; it is not a measure of claims under this credit program.
