How to Compare Gold Prices Across Dealers Before Buying

Learn how to compare like-for-like gold quotes by calculating the premium, adding fees and delivery, and checking each dealer’s buyback terms.

Compare the same gold product from each dealer, using quotes taken close together. Start with a timestamped spot price to estimate the gold’s metal value, then compare each seller’s premium, fees, delivery charges, and buyback offer. The lowest advertised price is not necessarily the lowest total cost—or the best resale deal.

What to compare in each dealer’s quote

A useful comparison holds the product constant. Two offers are not directly comparable merely because both are described as gold: coin or bar type, stated weight, purity, fine-gold content, and quantity all matter. Record these details along with the quote time so you can compare offers on the same basis.

  • Exact product: coin or bar, stated weight, purity, fine-gold content, and quantity.
  • Price basis: the dealer’s unit price and the time it was quoted.
  • Costs: transaction charges, delivery, insurance, and any other costs that apply to that purchase.
  • Exit terms: the dealer’s buyback price for the same item and the conditions attached to it.
  • Seller checks: operating history, address, complaint history, and whether its service and buyback process meet your needs.

Gold prices can change during the day, so note the spot reference and quote time, and compare dealer offers taken close together. The Royal Canadian Mint’s bullion guide distinguishes the changing spot price from the LBMA benchmark; neither is the same thing as a dealer’s retail offer.

Calculate the premium over the gold’s metal value

Spot is the current price for one troy ounce of metal for immediate delivery, commonly quoted in dollars per troy ounce. It is a reference for estimating a product’s metal value, not a promise that a retail coin or bar is available at that price. The CFTC and FINRA investor bulletin explains the spot-price basis; the Royal Canadian Mint guide defines a retail premium as the amount above the value of the gold contained in a product.

  1. Use one timestamped spot reference for all the offers you are comparing.
  2. Determine the item’s fine-gold content. Use that amount—not simply the item’s gross weight—to estimate its metal value.
  3. Subtract the estimated metal value from the dealer’s quoted price. The result is the premium in currency.
  4. Divide the premium by the estimated metal value and multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage.

For example, if the quoted price is P and the estimated value of the contained gold is V, the premium is P − V, and the premium percentage is (P − V) ÷ V × 100. Use the same price basis and calculation for every dealer. A percentage can make premiums easier to compare across products, but it does not make different products interchangeable.

Premiums reflect more than the gold itself. The Mint guide identifies production and transportation among the costs behind them and notes that smaller products typically have higher premiums relative to their metal weight. Treat this as a general pattern, not a guarantee for every item or dealer.

Compare the all-in purchase cost

Ask each dealer to put the agreed retail price and all applicable charges in writing before you commit. Add the quoted item price, transaction charges, delivery, insurance, and other purchase-specific costs to find the total you would actually pay. The CFTC and FINRA say: “Ask for all fees, costs, commissions, and agreed retail price in writing BEFORE signing a sales agreement or turning over any money.”

Storage, account administration, and tax or penalty considerations may matter in some arrangements, such as an IRA, but they do not automatically apply to an ordinary retail bullion purchase. The CFTC and FINRA bulletin discusses those costs in the context of precious-metals IRAs; confirm which charges apply to your own transaction instead of assuming they do.

Check the buyback price and spread

Ask what the dealer would pay to buy back the exact item, and get the conditions in writing. The difference between the dealer’s selling price and its buyback price is the spread. It is a separate comparison from the purchase premium: a low premium does not, by itself, show what it may cost to resell. Include any selling costs or conditions when assessing the exit offer.

Compare bars and coins only when the choice is open

First compare like-for-like dealer offers. If you are still choosing a product, weigh these trade-offs rather than assuming one format is always cheaper or better:

  • Bars: often have lower premiums per unit of gold, particularly in larger sizes. A single large bar can be less convenient if you later want to sell only part of your holding.
  • Coins: can make partial resale easier because you can sell individual pieces, but that flexibility does not guarantee a lower premium.
  • Smaller pieces: can cost more per unit of gold than larger products, though the actual difference depends on the product and dealer.

When considering different formats, compare premium per unit of fine gold, minimum purchase and total cash outlay, ease of partial resale, buyback conditions, and delivery or storage costs. These are general trade-offs; check the exact offers rather than treating them as universal rules.

Check the dealer, not just the number

Price is only one part of a sound comparison. Check how long the dealer has operated, whether it provides a verifiable address, its complaint history, and whether you understand its payment, delivery, and buyback process. A low quote alone is not proof that a transaction is trustworthy.

For US buyers, the CFTC and FINRA bulletin says retail precious-metals dealers are not federally regulated and points consumers toward local consumer organizations and state regulators. It also reports that, over the decade preceding the bulletin, the CFTC charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals in alleged fraudulent sales totaling more than $500 million. That is an agency-reported allegation about those cases, not an estimate of all dealer overpricing or a current market statistic.

Use a worksheet and reconfirm before ordering

Capture each offer in a simple worksheet. Reconfirm the quote and product availability before placing an order because prices and inventory can move.

Field What to record
Dealer Name, address, and relevant seller checks
Product Exact coin or bar, stated weight, purity, fine-gold content, and quantity
Quote Unit price, quote timestamp, and the spot reference used for comparison
Premium Premium in currency and as a percentage of estimated metal value
Purchase costs Payment or transaction charges, delivery, insurance, and other applicable fees
Total Final amount payable for the stated quantity
Buyback Dealer’s offer for the same item, conditions, and any selling costs

Keep the comparison within its limits

Dealer quotes, spot prices, inventory, shipping, and taxes vary by time and location. This method helps compare stated offers; it cannot establish which dealer currently has the best price without current, like-for-like quotes. The CFTC and FINRA also warn that metals prices fluctuate and that IRA rollovers can involve complex tax rules, fees, and commissions. This guide is a way to evaluate prices and terms, not individualized investment or retirement-account advice.
