ATI announced its acquisition of Palo Alto graphics-chip designer ArtX on February 17, 2000, for approximately $400 million in ATI stock and options. ATI recorded the deal as completed in April. The acquisition brought ATI technology and about 70 engineers, helped it move into integrated graphics and consumer electronics, and connected it to Nintendo’s GameCube: ArtX’s work on Nintendo’s Dolphin project became the basis for the Flipper graphics core.
What did ATI acquire, and when?

How much did ATI pay for ArtX?
The announced consideration was approximately $400 million in ATI stock and options, rather than a stated all-cash payment. EE Times reported the amount on February 17, 2000. The figure is an approximate value of the announced consideration; it should not be read as a cash price.
Why did ATI buy ArtX?
ATI described the deal as part of a strategy to expand in the high-volume integrated-graphics market. Acquiring ArtX also gave ATI a route into consumer electronics and video-game consoles, extending its opportunities beyond graphics products for personal computers. What did ArtX make for Nintendo?
ArtX supplied graphics technology for Nintendo’s next-generation console project, code-named Dolphin. After the acquisition, ATI licensed its Flipper chip to Nintendo as the central graphics core of the GameCube. ATI reported royalty revenue from Nintendo for Flipper in the first quarter of 2002. That shows the acquisition’s commercial connection extended beyond the initial transaction into royalties tied to the GameCube graphics chip. ATI Technologies’ 2003 filing
