AMD bought Finnish AI company Silo AI to add model-building expertise, software and enterprise delivery capabilities to its chip business. The all-cash deal was valued at approximately $665 million: announced on July 10, 2024, and completed on August 12, 2024. AMD said the acquisition would help it develop and deploy AI models on AMD hardware and expand its end-to-end enterprise AI offering.
What AMD bought—and when
AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire Silo AI on July 10, 2024. The transaction was valued at approximately $665 million in cash, and AMD said it expected to close in the second half of that year. AMD announced the deal’s completion on August 12, 2024, again describing the price as approximately $665 million in cash. AMD’s announcement and completion release establish the transaction’s stated value and timeline.
Silo AI is based in Helsinki, Finland, with operations in Europe and North America. AMD described it as Europe’s largest private AI lab. In the initial announcement, Combient CEO Mats Agervi characterized its team as 300 AI scientists and engineers; that is a partner-reported figure quoted by AMD, not an independently audited headcount.
What Silo AI adds to AMD
AI talent and enterprise delivery
Silo AI brought AI scientists and engineers with experience building end-to-end solutions for cloud, embedded and endpoint computing. AMD named Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce and Unilever among Silo AI’s customers, and identified Nokia and Combient in connection with its work. That experience matters to AMD because building AI systems for organizations involves more than supplying processors: models must be trained, adapted and integrated into customers’ environments.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Models and software for AMD hardware
Silo AI developed multilingual open-source large language models, including Poro and Viking, on AMD platforms. AMD’s completion announcement said the team had trained language models at scale on AMD Instinct accelerators and had experience integrating models for end customers. AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K says Silo AI developed a software stack used to train multiple state-of-the-art LLMs on Instinct accelerators. The filing describes the acquisition as expanding AMD’s capability to accelerate development and deployment of AI models on its hardware. AMD’s SEC filings include the 2024 Form 10-K.
AMD’s broader AI software offering includes ROCm, an open software stack for AI training and inference. The strategic fit is therefore not simply “more AI models”: it is expertise that can help customers use AMD processors and software together.

Why AMD made the deal
The acquisition advances a vertical-integration strategy: AMD can pair its data-center AI accelerators and ROCm software with a team that builds models and deploys AI solutions for businesses. AMD framed the goal as delivering end-to-end AI solutions based on open standards and collaboration with the wider AI ecosystem. In its announcement, AMD senior vice president Vamsi Boppana said Silo AI’s experts and experience with models built on AMD platforms would accelerate AMD’s AI strategy and the implementation of customer solutions.
That approach also addresses a practical barrier to adopting alternative AI hardware. Organizations need software, technical support and a path from model development to production—not just access to chips. Bringing Silo AI into AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group gives AMD additional in-house expertise for that work. At closing, AMD said the team would join the group led by Boppana. The original announcement said Silo AI co-founder and CEO Peter Sarlin would continue to lead the team inside AMD; the completion announcement confirmed the team’s integration into the group.

How the purchase fits AMD’s wider AI investments
AMD’s acquisition announcement said it had invested more than $125 million across a dozen AI companies in the preceding 12 months and had also acquired Mipsology and Nod.ai. Those figures describe AMD’s stated investment activity at the time of the July 2024 announcement, not the total cost of its AI strategy. The Silo AI deal’s disclosed value was approximately $665 million.
AMD’s stated rationale is strategic, not a published financial-return forecast. The cited announcements and 2024 filing do not provide a quantified revenue forecast, cost-synergy estimate or post-acquisition return target. The purchase price alone therefore does not show whether the deal will generate a particular financial return.

What happened to Poro and Viking?
Poro and Viking are examples of Silo AI’s multilingual open-source LLM work, and AMD said they were developed on AMD platforms. The acquisition brought Silo AI’s team and its model-development capabilities into AMD. The announcements and filing cited here do not specify a separate post-acquisition product roadmap or a change in the models’ availability, so the deal should not be read as proof of either.
How to assess the deal’s progress
The acquisition closed, but completion by itself does not demonstrate commercial success. A useful assessment separates what AMD disclosed from what remains unquantified:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Integration: AMD said Silo AI’s team joined its Artificial Intelligence Group when the acquisition closed.
- Technical fit: AMD’s 2024 filing says Silo AI’s software stack trained multiple LLMs on AMD Instinct accelerators.
- Customer reach: AMD identified enterprise customers and described work across cloud, embedded and endpoint computing.
- Financial payoff: AMD did not disclose a revenue forecast, synergy estimate or return target for the transaction in the materials cited above.
For investors, the central question is whether that combination of talent, software and customer implementation work helps AMD win more AI deployments for its hardware. The disclosed facts explain the strategic rationale; they do not establish the deal’s eventual financial outcome.
