Intel’s 2016 mobile-SoC exit ended development of its planned smartphone and standalone-tablet application processors, including Broxton and the SoFIA platforms. The decision was part of a broader restructuring that redirected resources toward businesses Intel expected to offer higher returns. It did not mean Intel stopped all mobile connectivity: the company made a separate decision about 5G smartphone modems in 2019.
What Intel cancelled in 2016
Intel cancelled the Broxton platform and the SoFIA 3GX, SoFIA LTE and SoFIA LTE2 commercial platforms, effective immediately, according to contemporary reporting that quoted Intel spokeswoman Kathryn Gill. These were application-processor platforms intended for phones and tablets. Intel’s mobile-SoC roadmap for those devices ended as a product-development business.
Contemporary reporting also described Intel’s Cherry Trail processors as being phased out for standalone tablets. That is distinct from the specifically named Broxton and SoFIA cancellations.
Why did Intel cancel Broxton and SoFIA?
Intel said the cancellations would let it move resources to products expected to deliver higher returns and advance its strategy. The decision fit a larger shift toward data-centric and other growth areas, including cloud computing, data centers, the Internet of Things, memory and programmable solutions, and connectivity, alongside more profitable mobile and PC products.

Intel announced the broader restructuring on April 19, 2016. It planned to reduce its workforce by up to 12,000 positions, approximately 11% of employees. The company projected $750 million in savings for 2016 and an annual savings run rate of $1.4 billion by mid-2017. Those are restructuring-wide figures, not published savings attributable solely to the mobile-SoC cancellations.
Intel did not publish a standalone profitability or market-share figure for its Atom mobile-SoC business in the cited announcements. The stated rationale was resource allocation and expected returns, not a disclosed financial breakdown of Atom mobile processors.

What happened to Intel Atom mobile processors?
Atom was associated with Intel’s efforts to bring its processors into phones and tablets, but the 2016 decision ended development of the named Broxton and SoFIA mobile platforms. It did not mean that every Intel processor or every Intel product used in a mobile device disappeared. The specific change was the end of Intel’s smartphone and standalone-tablet application-processor roadmap described above.
For readers tracking the broader strategy, Intel’s April 2016 restructuring announcement emphasized a move toward a “smart, connected world” and data-centric businesses. It did not provide a public, standalone accounting of the mobile Atom business’s returns.

Did Intel leave the smartphone-chip market?
Not all at once, and not in every product category. In 2016 Intel exited the smartphone and standalone-tablet application-processor development described here. It continued to have mobile-connectivity work; its later decision to leave the 5G smartphone-modem business came in 2019 and was a separate step.
On April 16, 2019, Intel said it would exit the 5G smartphone-modem business while assessing modem opportunities for PCs, the Internet of Things and other data-centric devices. On July 25, Intel and Apple announced a $1 billion transaction for most of Intel’s smartphone-modem business. Approximately 2,200 Intel employees were expected to join Apple as part of the transaction.
