In 2001, Jan du Preez, then president of Infineon Technologies North America Corp., said Infineon was not planning layoffs and wanted to hire more skilled workers. His statement described the company’s position at that time—not a permanent promise. Later workforce actions took place on a different timeline and across a broader geographic scope.
What did the Infineon executive say?
In an EE Times article published 2 April 2001, Jan du Preez said: “We are not planning to lay anybody off; in fact, we want to employ more skilled people.” He was speaking as president of Infineon Technologies North America Corp.
Du Preez also criticized what he called “knee-jerk reactions” by companies laying off thousands of workers after a couple of bad quarters, saying that was not Infineon’s approach. His remarks expressed an intention to avoid layoffs and recruit skilled staff, rather than a guarantee covering future decisions.
What was happening at Infineon in 2001?
The remarks came during a downturn in DRAM prices and amid a weak outlook for the networking industry. Despite those pressures, the 2001 article reported that Infineon said it was not planning drastic measures. The statement concerned the company’s approach at that point; it should not be read as a continuing employment policy.

What happened to Infineon jobs later?
In 2024, Reuters reported that Infineon planned 1,400 worldwide job cuts and 1,400 relocations as part of a cost program. The same report said forced redundancies in Germany were ruled out. Those details distinguish a worldwide workforce program from the narrower 2001 statement made by a North American executive, and distinguish job cuts from relocations and other employment changes. More recent company announcements describe both changes to production and expansion. Infineon’s June 2026 release about its Tijuana site said production would be transferred over several years, with no immediate changes for employees, customers or suppliers. The company’s July 2026 Dresden fab announcement cited 1,000 new direct jobs. These site-level announcements do not alter what du Preez said in 2001; they show why workforce statements need to be read in their specific time and context. How to interpret the no-layoff statement
- Speaker and scope: Jan du Preez was speaking for Infineon North America in 2001.
- Meaning: He said the company was not then planning layoffs and wanted to hire skilled people.
- Time limit: The statement was not a binding commitment by future management.
- Later actions: The 2024 worldwide program included planned cuts and relocations, while forced redundancies in Germany were excluded according to Reuters.
Infineon reported about 57,000 employees worldwide at the end of September 2025, according to company information published in 2026. That later headcount is a snapshot, not evidence that the 2001 statement remained in force. Infineon company information
