Stellar, Solana-based settlement, and Ripple Payments are options to investigate, but none is established as the cheapest way to send money internationally for every route. Their services work at different layers, and the total cost depends on the sending and receiving countries, exchange rates, provider charges, funding method, and how the recipient gets usable local currency. Compare complete quotes for the same transfer—not just blockchain fees.
What counts as an Ethereum alternative for cross-border payments?
“Alternative” can mean a different blockchain, a payment network that connects local providers, or a managed service built to move money across borders. Those are not interchangeable offers:
- Stellar describes a network-and-anchor model. Local partners, called anchors, can accept traditional currency and arrange local payout.
- Solana is presented as infrastructure for institutional stablecoin settlement and business payments, including cross-border payments and global payouts.
- Ripple Payments is a managed cross-border payment service that Ripple says can settle in fiat or stablecoins.
For a personal transfer, the key question is not which chain has the smallest fee in isolation. It is whether a service supports your corridor and delivers the desired amount to the recipient at an acceptable total cost.
Compare the complete cost and route
A low on-chain fee does not establish a low-cost international transfer. The final amount can also reflect a provider’s charge, the exchange-rate spread, funding and withdrawal costs, and the recipient’s cost to convert or cash out. Stellar’s FAQ makes the distinction explicit: “Each anchor or payment service provider offers their own fee structure.” Stellar’s cross-border payments page also says businesses are responsible for determining their compliance obligations.

Before choosing a service, check these details for the exact sending and receiving countries:
- Total delivered cost: Ask for the recipient’s net amount after provider fees, FX, funding, network, withdrawal, and cash-out costs.
- Availability and payout: Confirm the currency pair, payout method, supported countries, and whether the recipient can access local currency. A network-level count of locations does not confirm that a particular provider or cash-out route is available to you.
- Timing: Separate on-chain confirmation from the time needed for fiat payout and final availability. A fast transaction is not necessarily a fast completed remittance.
- Asset and issuer: If stablecoins are involved, identify the issuer, redemption route, reserve information, and any applicable freeze or clawback controls. A stablecoin’s peg design aims to limit price movement relative to its reference asset; it does not remove issuer, redemption, local FX, or access risks.
- Custody and compliance: Find out who holds the funds or keys, which regulated entity serves each country, and what identity, anti-money-laundering, and sanctions checks apply.
- Error handling: Check recipient requirements, customer support, and whether mistaken transfers can be reversed. Do not assume an on-chain payment has the same dispute process as a conventional money transfer.
Use the same amount, funding method, and payout method when comparing live quotes. The available sources do not establish a universally cheapest option or provide an independent, corridor-by-corridor price comparison.

How the main alternatives differ
Stellar: a network connected to local payment partners
Stellar’s cross-border explanation describes anchors that connect traditional currency acceptance with local payout. Its payments page lists remittances, peer-to-peer and account-to-account transfers, payroll, supplier invoices, government payments, and ecommerce as possible uses. The same page claims access to more than 475,000 cash-to-crypto on- and off-ramp locations worldwide. That is a network-level figure, not confirmation that a specific anchor, currency, or payout method is available in a particular corridor. Check the relevant provider and country before relying on it.
Stellar’s own pages publish different network-cost measures: its cross-border explainer gives an average transaction cost of $0.0007, while its stablecoin explainer gives an average cost of $0.000005 per operation and average network confirmation of 3–5 seconds. These are page-specific network figures, not a guaranteed current customer price or fiat payout time. The stablecoin explainer identifies USDC and EURC as issued by Circle, GYEN and ZUSD by GMO Trust, and AUDD by Novatti. It also cautions that not every wallet, exchange, or ramp supports every stablecoin. See Stellar’s stablecoin explainer and its payments page for the respective descriptions.

Solana: institutional settlement infrastructure
Solana’s institutional payments page identifies cross-border payments, card settlement, treasury, and global payouts as use cases. It says Visa has moved millions of USDC between partners over Solana in live pilots to settle fiat-denominated payments authorized over VisaNet. The page also describes Western Union’s USDPT stablecoin launch as planned for 2026 and identifies stablecoin activity involving Worldpay and Fiserv. These are Solana’s own ecosystem statements: the Visa activity is described as live pilots, while Western Union’s launch is described as planned. They do not amount to a standardized consumer remittance offer or disclose an all-in retail transfer cost. Details are on Solana’s institutional payments page.
Ripple Payments: a managed service
Ripple describes Ripple Payments as a managed cross-border service that can settle in fiat or stablecoins. Its current product page reports first- and third-party payouts across 60+ markets, more than $100 billion in payment volume, and 85+ global licenses for the Ripple Group. These are company-reported commercial claims; Ripple also notes that availability can vary by entity. They do not mean every service is offered in every country. Check the exact local entity, corridor, and payout method on Ripple’s product page.

In a separate company-authored article, Ripple says migrants sent approximately $685 billion to low- and middle-income countries in 2024 and that fees can exceed 6% of the amount sent. Those figures provide broad context, not a quoted price for any particular route. The same article reports $27.6 trillion in stablecoin transfer volume in 2024; that figure is not remittance volume. See Ripple’s remittances article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ethereum is not one fixed-fee baseline
Ethereum alternatives should be compared with the Ethereum route a sender would actually use, rather than with an assumed single Ethereum fee. A 2026 arXiv preprint analyzing data from January 2024 through March 2026 reports that Ethereum mainnet median fees fell from above $2 to below $0.02, while layer 2 median fees fell from $0.05 to $0.0015. These are study results for the stated measurement window, not a transaction quote or a like-for-like comparison of completed remittances, and the work is a preprint. The abstract is available at arXiv.

A practical way to choose
- Define the transfer. Note the sender’s country, recipient’s country, amount, funding source, desired payout currency and method, and whether the recipient can hold a stablecoin.
- Verify the full route. Confirm that the provider, asset and network, wallet or account, and recipient cash-out option all work in both countries. For Stellar routes, verify the relevant anchor rather than relying only on the network-wide ramp count.
- Request comparable quotes. Ask each provider for the amount the recipient will actually receive, the exchange rate, all fees, and the expected time to usable funds. Compare quotes made for the same transfer details.
- Check risk and recourse. Review the stablecoin issuer and redemption route, custody, local compliance requirements, support, and error or dispute handling before sending.
- Choose on delivered value and fit. A cheaper quoted network operation may not be a cheaper transfer if conversion, payout, or cash-out costs erase the difference.
Why the comparison matters
The World Bank’s 2026 payment systems overview says remittances are three times larger than official development assistance and amount to at least 3% of GDP in more than 60 countries. That scale makes cost and access important, but it does not identify the best service for an individual corridor. See the World Bank payment systems overview.
