If the transaction is flexible, waiting for the base fee to fall may lower the cost—but there is no universally cheapest hour, and a tracker reading is only a snapshot.
What determines the cost of an Ethereum transaction?
On Ethereum mainnet, transaction cost depends on two things: the amount of gas the transaction uses and the effective fee per unit of gas. Gas measures the computational work needed to execute a transaction. A basic ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas in Ethereum.org’s illustrative example, while a contract interaction can use a different amount.
Under Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee market, the per-gas fee has a base fee and, if included in the transaction, a priority fee. The base fee is set by the protocol and adjusts in response to recent block use: it rises after blocks that exceed the target and falls after blocks below the target. The base fee is burned. The priority fee is a tip that can signal urgency and encourage validators to include a transaction sooner.
The EIP-1559 specification explains that senders pay the base fee for the block that includes their transaction, plus the priority fee they set, provided the combined amount does not exceed the transaction’s maximum fee per gas. The max fee is a ceiling, not a forecast of the final charge. The transaction must authorize enough to cover the applicable base fee and tip; any unused fee headroom is returned under the EIP-1559 fee mechanics. Read the EIP-1559 specification.

How to check current gas fees before sending
- Open a live Ethereum gas tracker or estimator. Ethereum.org lists Etherscan’s Ethereum Gas Tracker and Blocknative’s estimator among monitoring options. Check the reading’s timestamp and the categories it displays; a general tracker is not a quote for your particular transaction.
- Review the estimate in your wallet. Enter or prepare the exact transaction and compare the wallet’s fee estimate with the tracker. The wallet can account for the transaction’s expected gas use, while a generic tracker mainly helps you see network fee conditions.
- If timing is flexible, check again later. Compare the base-fee trend rather than relying on a single reading. A period of lower demand can bring a lower base fee, but conditions can change from block to block.
- Before signing, inspect the fee settings and displayed total. Review the gas limit, max fee, and priority fee shown by the wallet. Do not lower the fee cap below what is needed for inclusion; a lower cap may prevent the transaction from being included under current conditions.
- After confirmation, distinguish the charged fee from the authorized maximum. The maximum fee is a cap. The actual fee depends on the gas used and the applicable base fee and priority fee, and unused fee allowance is not charged.
How to choose whether to wait
Waiting can make sense when the transaction is not time-sensitive and the base-fee trend is easing. If prompt inclusion matters, a higher priority fee may be appropriate, though no source establishes a universally optimal tip or cost-versus-speed threshold. There is no fixed hour or day that guarantees cheaper Ethereum transactions, so treat timing as a tradeoff between potential savings and the consequences of delay.
When comparing possible send times, keep the comparison consistent: use the same transaction and network, and separate a change in the base fee from a change in the priority fee. A different transaction may require a different amount of gas, so comparing generic estimates alone can be misleading.

Example: calculating a fee from gas and price
Ethereum.org gives an illustrative ETH transfer using 21,000 gas, a 10 gwei base fee, and a 2 gwei priority fee. The total is 21,000 × (10 + 2) = 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. These are example inputs, not a live quote or a claim about typical transaction costs. See Ethereum.org’s technical overview of gas and fees.

A tracker helps you observe current network conditions and compare them over time. It cannot guarantee the fee your transaction will pay: the estimate may change before inclusion, and the final cost depends on the transaction’s gas use and the fee conditions when it is included. Use the tracker to decide when to check, and your wallet’s transaction-specific estimate to review the transaction you are about to authorize.

Ethereum.org also points readers to Layer 2 gas-monitoring resources, but costs, bridging expenses, and application support vary by network and use case. A tracker comparison alone does not establish that a particular alternative network will always be cheaper for your transaction.
