Can a doctor control whether an AI tool recommends their practice? No reliable formula is established in the sources available here. Dr. John Spencer Ellis has described review presence, consistent business information, authority signals, and expertise content as possible ingredients in AI visibility—but those are his promotional claims, not verified ranking factors. The dependable work for a medical practice is more straightforward: keep public information accurate, invite authentic reviews fairly, and handle criticism without exposing patient information.
What Ellis says about AI visibility—and what remains unproven
In a LinkedIn post, Ellis connects possible AI visibility with four areas: online reviews, consistent practice information, authority signals, and content that demonstrates expertise. That is a description of his approach, not independent evidence that AI systems use those factors in a particular way. The available sources do not establish a ranking formula, prove that these steps will secure an AI recommendation, or show that they will bring a practice new patients.
Patients may ask AI tools for help finding a doctor, but the sources here do not establish how often that happens or how different systems choose whom to recommend. Treat AI visibility as an uncertain outcome, not a promise to patients or a substitute for sound practice operations.
Build a review process that is fair and authentic
Google Business Profile guidance gives practices a concrete starting point for managing reviews. A practice may invite patients to share feedback about a genuine experience and can provide a Google review link or QR code. The request should be consistent rather than filtered by whether someone seems likely to leave a positive review.

- Ask for honest feedback, not a particular rating or favorable wording.
- Do not offer incentives, pressure patients, or solicit only people expected to post positive reviews; Google says these practices are not allowed.
- Use a shared review link or QR code so the invitation is easy to act on.
- Apply the same invitation process to eligible patients rather than selecting recipients based on anticipated sentiment.
These practices can help keep a public review profile grounded in genuine experiences. They do not guarantee a higher rating or placement in an AI-generated answer.
Respond to criticism without compromising patient privacy
A public response can acknowledge a concern and offer a route to follow up without confirming that the reviewer is or was a patient. Do not disclose health information, appointment details, or other facts that could identify someone or reveal a care relationship. Google advises professional, brief replies, privacy protection, and moving complex concerns to a private channel; it also warns against personal attacks.

A useful response pattern is to recognize that the person has raised a concern, state that the practice takes feedback seriously, and invite them to contact the practice through an appropriate private channel. Avoid debating clinical details in public. Have compliance counsel review the practice’s response protocol for its obligations and circumstances.
Report policy violations, not merely negative reviews
Google allows businesses to report reviews that violate its policies. A review is not eligible for removal simply because it is critical, disputed, or damaging to the practice’s reputation. Use the reporting process when there is a policy basis, and do not treat it as a way to suppress unfavorable but otherwise permitted feedback.

Turn reputation upkeep into routine operations
Accurate public information and credible expertise content are sensible operational priorities, and they align with the factors Ellis says may matter for AI visibility. Their value should not depend on a promise that an AI system will recommend the practice.
- Review public practice details for accuracy and consistency across profiles.
- Make review invitations a standard, neutral part of the patient-feedback process.
- Assign responsibility for monitoring reviews and routing patient-specific concerns privately.
- Publish expertise information that is accurate and useful to patients, rather than content designed around unsupported AI-ranking promises.
Ellis is also associated with Reputation Return in promotional material describing reputation services for medical practices. That association is context, not independent evidence of effectiveness; the sources do not establish current service terms, verified referral arrangements, or results. If assessing a service, ask how it invites reviews, protects privacy, handles policy-based reporting, monitors platforms, and measures any claimed AI visibility outcome. Do not accept guaranteed recommendations or patient growth as established results.
