Tailscale announced a $160 million Series C on April 8, 2025, led by Accel. The company said it will use the financing to expand product and engineering work, grow internationally, and develop what it calls “identity-first networking.” SecurityWeek reported that the round brought Tailscale’s total funding to $275 million.

How much did Tailscale raise?

The Series C was $160 million (C$230 million in the company’s announcement), announced April 8, 2025. Accel led the round. SecurityWeek reported Tailscale had raised $275 million in total after the financing.

Who invested in the Series C?

Alongside lead investor Accel, participants named in the announcement included CRV, Insight Partners, Heavybit, and Uncork Capital. Tailscale also named George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, and Anthony Casalena, CEO of Squarespace, as investors.

What is Tailscale, and how is it different from a conventional VPN?

Tailscale is software for secure connectivity between people, devices, applications, companies, and cloud environments. Osler describes the Toronto-based company as providing zero-configuration virtual private networks. SecurityWeek characterizes the platform as serving DevOps, IT, and security teams, including zero-trust and workload-security use cases.

The company’s “identity-first networking” framing puts user or workload identity at the center of access decisions rather than relying chiefly on fixed IP addresses or network location. Avery Pennarun, a Tailscale leader, wrote: “We think there’s a better way forward. We’re calling it identity-first networking.” The financing announcement does not provide enough detail to compare Tailscale’s technical controls, integrations, or pricing with competing networking products.

How does Tailscale plan to use the money?

Tailscale said the capital will support product and engineering work, global expansion, and efforts to make secure networking easier to operate as the network grows. SecurityWeek reported plans to grow engineering, sales, and product teams. The company also said it intends to support free customers and preserve backward compatibility.

What the financing says—and does not say—about Tailscale

The round signals investor backing for Tailscale’s identity-centered approach to secure connectivity. It does not, by itself, establish customer adoption, product performance, or how Tailscale compares with other VPN, zero-trust, or cloud-networking offerings. The financing coverage identifies AI workloads among the connectivity environments the platform can serve, but does not name specific AI customers or document deployment results.
