Avnet joined ChinaEcom, an initiative described as government-sponsored, in January 2000 as a way to reach Chinese demand for electronic components. The $71 billion figure came from the headline of the 2000 EE Times report; it is not a current market-size estimate. The available archive does not establish the deal’s terms or whether Avnet remained involved.
What was Avnet’s ChinaEcom deal?
A January 21, 2000 EE Times update reported that Avnet Inc., an electronic-components distributor, had joined an e-commerce initiative called ChinaEcom. The report described the initiative as government-sponsored and said the move could affect competition in China’s electronic-components market. The accessible archive is an index page, so the article’s full account and agreement details cannot be verified.
In practical terms, the reported move was Avnet’s participation in an online-commerce initiative aimed at the Chinese market. The available account does not say whether ChinaEcom operated as a marketplace, how Avnet’s participation worked, or what commercial arrangement the parties made.
Why was Avnet targeting China?
The stated strategic aim was exposure to Chinese electronic-component demand. For a distributor, an e-commerce initiative could in principle offer another way to connect suppliers and customers, but the surviving account does not describe ChinaEcom’s design or show what advantages it offered Avnet.

It should be read as that report’s characterization of China’s electronics market at the time—not as a figure for the electronic-components market alone, and not as a current estimate.
Did Avnet’s e-commerce strategy continue?
The available sources do not establish whether Avnet kept a role in ChinaEcom or whether that initiative continued. They also do not establish ChinaEcom’s ownership, participating suppliers, transaction mechanics, contract economics or launch performance. Avnet’s later scale shows that the company remained a major distributor, but it does not prove continuity with this particular initiative.

Avnet’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K reports $22.20 billion in total sales and $20.75 billion in electronic-components sales. Its August 6, 2025 earnings release reports $5.6 billion in fourth-quarter sales and says Asia had achieved a fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales growth. Those company-wide figures provide current business context, not evidence of Avnet’s ChinaEcom history.
How does the later China e-commerce context compare?
China’s online retail market is much broader than electronic-component distribution, so national e-commerce growth should not be treated as a measure of demand for Avnet products or as proof that ChinaEcom succeeded. The Ministry of Commerce reported that national online retail sales grew 7.2% in 2024 and that China remained the world’s largest online-retail market for 12 consecutive years. A State Council report put first-quarter 2024 online retail sales at 3.3 trillion yuan, up 12.4% year over year, and noted more than 100,000 cross-border e-commerce businesses in 2023.
