Their March 2022 multiyear partnership let eligible Android users choose how to pay for Spotify Premium: through Google Play Billing or Spotify’s own payment system. The choice can affect who manages your receipts, payment support, and cancellation—not whether you receive a bundled or automatically cheaper subscription.
What Google and Spotify announced
On March 23, 2022, the companies announced a multiyear user-choice billing partnership. Spotify users who downloaded the app from Google Play could be offered two payment options side by side during checkout: Spotify’s payment system or Google Play Billing. Why the agreement mattered
Google Play has historically tied many in-app digital purchases to its billing system and charged developers service fees. For a large subscription service such as Spotify, an alternative checkout could mean more control over the customer payment relationship while retaining distribution through Google Play. It also offered a prominent test of whether users and developers would use billing choice.
Contemporary reporting described a 15% service fee as common for subscriptions in the 2022 context; that historical figure is not a universal rate for Google Play in 2026. Nor did alternative billing mean Spotify escaped all Google commercial terms: developers using Google Play billing programs remain subject to applicable requirements and fees. Neither route is inherently cheaper for the subscriber. A developer’s fee savings, if any, do not automatically become a lower customer price.
Who could see the payment choice?
There is no universal promise that every Spotify Android user will see both buttons. Availability can depend on the Google Play country, Spotify’s implementation and rollout, the app version, account status, the purchase flow, and local program rules.

Google’s current consumer documentation lists eligible markets that include the United States, United Kingdom, EEA countries, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa, and South Korea, subject to program conditions. The user experience can vary: in the EEA, for example, users may encounter alternative billing without necessarily seeing the same choice screen offered in other markets. What changed by 2026
The 2022 Spotify agreement was an early, high-profile example of billing choice. Google’s programs subsequently expanded into more markets and distinguish between alternative billing without a user-choice screen and user-choice billing. Google announced a revised fee structure taking effect June 30, 2026, in the United States, EEA, and UK. Under the stated new structure, the service fee starts at 10% on the first $1 million in annual earnings; other rates depend on transaction type, region, install status, and program participation. Alternative-billing transactions remain subject to applicable service fees, and payment-processing charges may also apply. How to choose or switch billing safely
Choose based on how you want to manage payment
- Google Play Billing: a fit if you want Google payment history, centralized Android subscription management, or an eligible Play payment method.
- Spotify billing: a fit if you prefer managing payment directly with Spotify or want to use a Spotify offer or payment method shown there.
Check the purchase before changing providers
- Open Spotify on Android and start the Premium checkout flow. If offered, select Pay with Google Play billing to use Google’s checkout; exact wording and screen order vary.
- Before changing an existing subscription, identify who currently bills you by checking the receipt or payment history. Spotify’s Google Play payment instructions explain Google-billed charges and receipts.
- If switching requires cancellation and a new subscription, cancel through the current billing provider first. Access may continue until the paid period ends; check its end date before subscribing again to avoid overlapping charges.
- Compare the displayed price, renewal date, taxes or currency, and promotion terms. Do not assume a promotional or grandfathered rate will carry over.
- After subscribing through the new route, confirm the Premium plan appears on the intended Spotify account and save the receipt and cancellation record.
Google Play balance and gift cards generally cannot pay for an alternative-billing purchase. If a payment fails or you need billing help, start with the company shown as the payment processor on the receipt.

What developers need to weigh
Billing choice is not simply a button added to a checkout. A participating developer must assess regional eligibility, applicable Google service fees, payment-processing costs, engineering and transaction-reporting work, customer support, refunds and disputes, and subscription entitlement or migration handling. Google’s requirements include offering the required choice, using relevant APIs for reporting and controls, supporting users of the alternative system, and meeting payment and consumer-protection obligations.
