Galaxy Note7 Availability and Pricing: Is It Still Available?

The Note7’s $850–$890 U.S. price is historical. Every unit was recalled, so resale listings are not a safe buying option.

No—not as a phone anyone should buy or use. Samsung discontinued the Galaxy Note7, and the U.S. recall ultimately covered every unit, including replacement phones. Its original U.S. selling price was about $850–$890 in 2016; that is a historical price, not a current value or a reason to consider a resale listing.

If you own one, do not turn it on or charge it. Contact the original retailer, carrier, or Samsung to ask how to handle the recalled device safely and whether any remedy remains available.

Galaxy Note7 availability today

Samsung ended production and sale of the Note7 in October 2016. There is no legitimate current retail buying route for it. A marketplace listing may still appear, but a listing is not evidence that a device is safe, officially supported, eligible for activation, or suitable for ordinary shipping.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) expanded the recall on October 13, 2016, to cover all Galaxy Note7 smartphones, including replacements. Treat any working, refurbished, imported, sealed, or “new old stock” unit as a recalled device—not as a normal used-phone purchase. Samsung’s statement on the product’s discontinuation is available in its Galaxy Note7 announcement.

  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

What the Galaxy Note7 originally cost

The CPSC recorded a U.S. selling price of approximately $850–$890 during the phone’s 2016 sales period. That range varied by carrier and sales channel; it is not a single universal MSRP, and it should not be read as a current resale value. The range appears in the CPSC’s initial recall notice.

For a buyer comparing prices, the important distinction is that a low asking price does not make this a bargain: the recall and fire hazard apply regardless of what a seller charges. No current legitimate Note7 price is established by the historical recall information.

Release, recall, and discontinuation timeline

Date What happened
August 2016 U.S. sales began through carriers, electronics retailers, Samsung, and online sellers.
September 15, 2016 The CPSC announced the initial U.S. recall for devices sold before that date.
September 2016 Samsung distributed replacement phones under the initial program. A green battery icon was one measure used to identify replacement units at the time.
October 11, 2016 The FAA’s retrospective record documents that production and sale had stopped.
October 13, 2016 The CPSC expanded the U.S. recall to all Note7 phones, including replacement devices; approximately 1.9 million units were included.

The initial recall offered a refund or a replacement device under its program terms, but that was a historical remedy, not a promise of current eligibility. The dates and recall scope are detailed in the initial CPSC notice and the expanded CPSC recall. The replacement identification measure is described in Samsung’s U.S. recall update.

Are replacement or refurbished Note7 phones safe?

No. The battery could overheat and catch fire, and incidents involving replacement devices led to the expanded recall. The CPSC’s October 2016 action covered replacements as well as the initial phones. A green battery icon, later production date, intact casing, sealed box, or seller’s “official replacement” claim does not exempt a device from that recall.

Do not try to make a Note7 safe by replacing its battery, testing it, or using it only on Wi-Fi. The recall applies to the phone, and the available sources do not establish a manufacturer-supported modification that removes the risk.

What to do if you still own one

  1. Stop using it and power it down. The CPSC instructed consumers to immediately stop using and power down recalled Note7 devices. Do not turn it on just to check its software or transfer files.
  2. Do not charge it. Keep the device away from flammable materials while you arrange next steps.
  3. Contact the original retailer or carrier, or Samsung. Ask for the correct local return or surrender procedure and whether any remedy is still available. Eligibility may depend on country and purchase channel, and a 2016 refund program should not be assumed to remain open.
  4. Do not put it in checked baggage or send it through ordinary post or parcel service. Ask the relevant carrier how a recalled lithium-ion device may be handled. U.S. transportation authorities treated Note7 transport as an imminent hazard during the recall period; see the FAA emergency restriction document. Rules and procedures can differ by jurisdiction and carrier.

Can you buy one online or keep one as a collectible?

An online listing is not proof of safe or legitimate availability. Selling a recalled working phone passes a known safety problem to another person; do not resell or give one away as a usable device. “Sealed,” “unused,” and “display” descriptions do not establish that its battery is safe.

A nonfunctional display object is different from a phone intended to be powered on, but do not charge, activate, or test a Note7 to establish its condition. If you are considering retaining one, get handling guidance from Samsung or the relevant local authority rather than treating collector interest as an exception to the recall.

What to buy instead

If you want a supported Samsung phone, choose from the company’s current product range rather than sourcing a Note7. Start with Samsung’s U.S. smartphone lineup and verify current models, prices, availability, and support details before purchasing.

Model names, prices, trade-in offers, and support periods change, so check the specific device and seller at the time you buy. Network compatibility also varies by region and carrier; even if an individual Note7 could technically connect to a network, that would not change its recall status or make it a sensible purchase.
