There is no universal winner: Adyen is a strong candidate for businesses combining international and in-person payments or needing platform payouts; Stripe stands out for developer-oriented implementation and configurable marketplace payments through Connect; Braintree is worth a close look when accepting PayPal and cards through one integration is a priority. Compare the providers against your countries, payment methods, operating model and actual pricing schedule—not just headline rates.

How do Adyen, Braintree and Stripe differ?

All three offer payment integrations, but their clearest strengths differ. Adyen’s documented product scope spans online and in-person payments, local payment methods and platform capabilities. Stripe emphasizes developer tools and publishes a standard US domestic-card price; Stripe Connect adds connected-account and marketplace controls. Braintree’s defining distinction is a unified integration for PayPal and cards, alongside wallets, vaulting and other payment tools.

Comparison Adyen Stripe Braintree
Payment reach Online and in-person payments, with global and local methods documented; availability varies by country and method. Stripe’s pricing page lists 100+ payment methods and access in 195 countries; confirm availability and pricing for the specific country and method. Cards, PayPal, wallets and local methods are documented; supported methods depend on the banking partner and region.
Platforms and marketplaces Platform APIs, payouts and marketplace use cases, including peer-to-peer marketplaces, on-demand services and crowdfunding, are documented. Connect supports connected accounts, fee collection and different arrangements for who handles pricing for users. Marketplace features are documented, but confirm that the particular operating model and region are supported.
Developer onboarding API Explorer, client libraries, webhooks and test tools are documented. Developer resources include sample code, a CLI, test environments, webhooks and versioned API changes. SDKs, Drop-in and Hosted Fields, sandbox testing and go-live steps are documented.
Pricing signal Fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee; the cited pricing page states no setup or monthly fees. Method and geography affect the price. Public standard US domestic-card rate, with additional fees for some international cards and currency conversion. Account-specific merchant pricing schedule. The pricing guide says PayPal transactions have no additional Braintree fee; other fees depend on the schedule.
In-person payments Explicitly included in the documented product scope. Check whether the relevant in-person product and terminal capabilities are available in the target country. In-store payments are documented; check regional and partner requirements.

How should you compare payment processing costs?

Compare the complete cost of the payment mix you expect to process, not one card rate in isolation. Cross-border payments, currency conversion, payment method, disputes and payouts can change the total. Request or calculate costs using your likely countries, transaction types and volume, and verify the applicable terms directly with the provider.

Provider What the cited pricing information establishes What to verify
Adyen Its pricing page describes a fixed processing fee plus a fee determined by payment method and states no setup or monthly fees for the displayed transaction pricing. Adyen’s page was accessed 2026-10-01. Rates by country and payment method, plus the commercial terms for your expected volume. There is no single universal figure established here.
Stripe Stripe’s current pricing page, accessed 2026-10-01, lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic-card transaction as its standard US rate. It also lists additional percentages for international cards and currency conversion. Country-specific rates, custom packages and any fees relevant to your payment mix. The cited figure is not a universal global rate.
Braintree The pricing guide says PayPal transactions have no additional Braintree fee. Discount, per-transaction, cross-border and chargeback fees are determined by the merchant’s pricing schedule. Your actual merchant schedule. The cited documentation does not establish a standard public rate applicable to every account.

Stripe Connect’s page says Connect starts at 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card charge and that platforms may qualify for revenue share subject to requirements. Treat that as a separate platform-pricing consideration, not as a substitute for checking your specific Connect arrangement and other applicable costs.

Which provider fits a marketplace or platform?

Choose Adyen for a broad platform and payment footprint

Consider Adyen when the platform needs online and in-person acceptance, local payment methods, payouts and marketplace-related APIs under one provider. Its API Explorer lists use cases such as peer-to-peer marketplaces, on-demand services and crowdfunding. Before committing, establish country-specific method availability, onboarding requirements, capture and settlement choices, PCI scope and negotiated volume pricing.

Choose Stripe Connect for connected-account and fee controls

Connect is the clearest match when the product needs connected accounts, fee collection and choices about who sets or handles pricing for users. Stripe also describes potential revenue share for eligible platforms, subject to requirements. Map the desired flow—who charges the customer, collects fees and manages the connected-account relationship—to the supported Connect model before estimating cost.

Consider Braintree when PayPal is central

Braintree documents accepting PayPal and cards through one integration, as well as one-time, vaulted and recurring PayPal use cases. Its broader tooling includes marketplace features, fraud tools, disputes, webhooks and recurring billing. Confirm banking-partner and regional eligibility: the payment-method documentation says availability depends on these factors, and some newer PayPal flows are US-only.

Which provider fits a direct online or omnichannel merchant?

  • Adyen: A strong candidate when one integration for online and in-person payments, local methods and international operations matters. Validate the required methods and commercial terms country by country.
  • Stripe: A strong candidate when a product team values developer tooling, testing resources and broad payment-method coverage, or needs subscriptions alongside payments. Verify local availability and whether its in-person offering meets the target market’s needs.
  • Braintree: A strong candidate when PayPal alongside cards is a strategic requirement and the merchant meets the applicable banking-partner and regional requirements. Compare the merchant-specific pricing schedule rather than assuming another provider’s public rate applies.

These are fit signals, not guarantees of lower costs, higher conversion or easier approval. The available product and pricing descriptions establish features and pricing descriptions, not comparative performance results.

What should you check before integrating?

  1. Map the payment footprint. List the countries you serve, settlement currencies, required card and local payment methods, wallets and card-present channels.
  2. Define the business model. Establish whether you are a direct merchant, marketplace, SaaS platform or payment facilitator; platform requirements can change the account and funds-flow design.
  3. Model full costs. Use actual country and method pricing, and include cross-border, currency-conversion, dispute and payout fees where applicable.
  4. Review controls and compliance. Map PCI DSS scope, tokenization or vaulting, 3D Secure 2, fraud controls, disputes, refunds and webhook reliability.
  5. Test the highest-value flows. Use each provider’s sandbox to test the payment paths that matter most, then confirm production onboarding requirements before go-live.
  6. Plan operations and exit options. Review reporting, reconciliation, support, data portability and account migration so routine operations and a future provider change are understood.

How to make the final choice

Shortlist providers by hard requirements first: country and method availability, business-model support, settlement needs and in-person coverage. Then compare the applicable commercial terms and test the most important payment paths in a sandbox. If two providers meet the same requirements, decide whether the stronger fit is Adyen’s online-and-in-person platform scope, Stripe’s developer and Connect controls, or Braintree’s combined PayPal-and-card integration. The best choice is the one whose verified capabilities and total costs match your actual operating model.
