Reports through May 2026 describe BOE as a constrained supplier that may lose business on some models while still targeting substantial iPhone shipments. The reported changes are supply-chain decisions, not proof that iPhones with BOE panels are defective.
What the reports say about Apple and BOE
BOE Technology, a Chinese display maker, is one of several companies reported to supply OLED panels for iPhones. Samsung Display and LG Display are also in Apple’s display supply chain; the industry supplier list is summarized in CMB International’s research. Apple does not use one supplier for every iPhone screen, and allocation can vary by model, panel design, factory and production run.
The strongest interpretation of the reporting is that Apple has shifted or withheld some BOE orders, not that it has publicly dismissed BOE as a supplier. The reports rely on industry and supply-chain sources; Apple has not publicly confirmed the specific order changes or provided a model-by-model supplier list.
How the reported situation developed
February 2025: a large reported shortfall
A February 10, 2025 report said BOE had shipped about 7–8 million panels against an expected 40 million since the beginning of 2024, with many panels reportedly rejected and much of the volume redirected to Samsung Display. These were reported figures, not totals confirmed by Apple. The same coverage said BOE remained under consideration for the then-upcoming iPhone SE 4. Digital Trends’ account of the 2025 report also identified BOE panels in iPhone 14, 15 and 16 programs.

Late 2025 and January 2026: further production disruption
Reports described new or continuing BOE production problems beginning in November and December 2025. In January 2026, TechNode, citing industry reporting, said Apple had shifted millions of OLED-panel orders to Samsung Display. It reported disruptions or suspended production for panels associated with iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17, while BOE focused on stabilizing supply for iPhone 17e. The account did not include a public technical failure analysis or an Apple statement. Read the January 2026 report.
May 2026: evidence the relationship continued
A later TechNode report said BOE was targeting about 35 million iPhone OLED shipments in 2026. That is a reported target, not evidence that the panels were actually delivered, but it is inconsistent with claiming a complete supplier break. TechNode reported the target and continued relationship.

What “quality problems” can mean
In a display supply chain, quality is broader than whether a screen looks bad to a user. A panel may fail checks for pixel defects, brightness uniformity, color calibration, light leakage, edge or cutout precision, touch response, power efficiency, durability, reliability or consistency across batches. Earlier reporting on BOE’s Apple work also referred to light leakage around the Dynamic Island cutout.
Yield is a separate but related issue: it is the share of panels produced that pass inspection. Low yield can make it difficult or costly to deliver enough panels on schedule even if many of the panels that do pass are acceptable. The January 2026 account referred to irregularities in a key manufacturing process, but did not establish publicly which defect rates or failure modes Apple measured. Why advanced panels matter
Reports have also described BOE as struggling to match Samsung Display and LG Display on newer LTPO or LTPO+ designs. LTPO is a display backplane technology associated with more advanced OLED implementations; capability and production yield can affect whether a supplier qualifies for a particular panel program. A supplier can miss out on a premium panel order because it cannot meet the required technology, volume or consistency, even without evidence that all of its panels are visibly inferior.
In May 2026, iClarified reported that BOE was likely to miss some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max OLED orders because of LTPO+ challenges and that Samsung Display and LG Display were moving ahead for those models. Which iPhones may be affected?
Reports have associated BOE with panels for several generations, but exact allocations are not public and may change by production period or panel type.

The reports above do not establish that every unit of any listed model uses BOE, or that every unit uses Samsung or LG instead. They also do not establish actual consumer defect rates by supplier.

Why Apple might keep BOE in the supply chain
Keeping multiple qualified suppliers can diversify capacity and give Apple alternatives to relying heavily on Samsung Display. BOE can also add manufacturing capacity and competitive pressure on pricing. Apple may accept a supplier for selected models or less demanding panel designs without approving it for the most advanced Pro displays. These are plausible business incentives, not a strategy Apple has publicly confirmed.
Samsung Display is the most frequently named recipient of redirected orders and is reportedly better positioned to absorb volume, with established Apple business and experience in advanced OLED panels. LG Display is also identified as a participant and potential beneficiary, including for premium iPhone orders. A greater share of orders going to either company could concentrate supply, but the reports do not quantify the eventual split or show that Apple’s retail prices will change as a result.
What this means if you are buying an iPhone
A supplier shift does not mean that a particular iPhone is defective, counterfeit or automatically inferior. Apple’s validation and calibration processes may result in no user-visible difference. Different supplier panels can exist within the same model line, but Apple’s public product materials do not offer a simple consumer-facing lookup for the original panel supplier. Repair screens may also come from a different source than the panel installed at manufacture.
