Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The best tool depends on what you mean by “live visitors.” For a current traffic and campaign snapshot, use Google Analytics 4, Plausible, or Matomo. To see how visitors move through pages, use Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar, Mouseflow, or Lucky Orange. For many small businesses, the practical pairing is GA4 for acquisition and conversions plus Clarity for recordings and heatmaps.
No tool gives a complete, guaranteed view of every person on a site. Reporting windows, consent choices, browser blockers, and processing delays affect what appears. “Visitor tracking” usually means observing an anonymous or pseudonymous session—not identifying a person by name.
Quick comparison: which live visitor tool fits?
| Tool | Best for | Live traffic and behavior | Replay and analysis | Pricing model or free option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | Campaign, event, and conversion monitoring | Realtime users, events, pages, sources, locations, and devices; data typically appears within a few minutes | No session replay or heatmaps | Standard property is generally free; enterprise 360 is separate |
| Microsoft Clarity | Free recordings and heatmaps | Near-real-time behavior analysis; Clarity Live browser extension | Recordings, heatmaps, rage-click and dead-click insights | Microsoft currently describes it as free, with no stated traffic limits |
| Lucky Orange | Live visitor view and on-site intervention | Live Visitor View, plus chat, surveys, and announcements | Recordings, dynamic heatmaps, funnels, and form analytics | Paid, session-based plans; verify current tiers and billing |
| Hotjar | Behavior analysis with visitor feedback | More useful for recorded sessions and feedback than a live traffic console | Heatmaps, recordings, surveys, feedback, and higher-tier funnels and trends | Basic free option; paid products and usage allowances vary |
| Mouseflow | Funnels, forms, and friction analysis | Behavior data is centered on captured sessions rather than a dedicated live visitor console | Replay, heatmaps, funnels, form and journey analytics, friction detection | Free plan with a session allowance; paid plans are session-limited |
| Plausible Analytics | Simple, privacy-focused traffic dashboard | Realtime dashboard refreshes every 30 seconds; “current” means activity in the previous five minutes | No replay or heatmaps | Subscription; check the vendor page for current pricing |
| Matomo | Analytics depth and data ownership | Realtime reports, visitor logs, and visitor profiles | Heatmaps and session recording depend on configuration or add-ons | Free self-hosted On-Premise option; Cloud pricing scales with hits |
These categories are not interchangeable. A traffic dashboard answers how many visits are happening and where they came from; behavioral tools help explain what people did within a visit. A live visitor count is generally a recent-activity measure, not a literal headcount of everyone currently looking at a page.

#1 Best Overall
Individual behavior analysis
Choose recordings, heatmaps, funnels, and form analytics when you need to understand confusing navigation, a stalled checkout, repeated clicks, or form abandonment. Clarity is a free starting point; Hotjar adds surveys and feedback; Mouseflow emphasizes friction and funnel analysis.
Intervention during a visit
If a team intends to chat with a visitor, launch a survey, or show an announcement while someone is browsing, Lucky Orange is the shortlist option that explicitly combines a live visitor view with those features. Use intervention only when someone is available to respond and the setup meets your privacy obligations.
1. Google Analytics 4: best for free traffic and campaign monitoring
Best for: Marketing, ecommerce, publishing, and agency teams whose primary question is what traffic and events are occurring. Open Google Analytics.
GA4’s Realtime report shows recent users and activity, including events and page-level information. Google says realtime data is typically available within a few minutes, but realtime reports have fewer dimensions and metrics than reports over longer periods. Data may also change while processing completes; Google notes that some reporting can take 24–48 hours. See Google’s data freshness guidance and its Realtime report documentation.
GA4 is useful for campaign monitoring, event and conversion measurement, and ecommerce reporting. It is not a live visitor-by-visitor replay tool: it does not show a recording of an individual’s clicks or scrolls. Consent settings, identity and attribution methods, filters, ad blockers, and processing rules can also make its counts differ from other products.
Choose it when: you need aggregate acquisition and conversion reporting. Pair it with Clarity, Hotjar, Mouseflow, or Lucky Orange if you need to investigate individual session behavior.
2. Microsoft Clarity: best free tool for recordings and heatmaps
Best for: Site owners and UX teams who want to find usability problems without starting with a paid behavioral analytics plan. Create a Clarity project.
Rank #2
Clarity provides session recordings, click and scroll heatmaps, filters, and signals such as rage clicks and dead clicks. Microsoft describes the service as free, with no stated traffic limits, and says it does not sample traffic. It also offers Google Analytics integration and the Clarity Live browser extension for quickly viewing interaction data. These are vendor claims; “free” does not remove privacy obligations or make Clarity a full replacement for acquisition, revenue, and campaign reporting. See Clarity pricing, the documentation, and the FAQ.
Recommended Free Tools
Clarity is a behavior-analysis tool, not a CCTV feed of every visitor. Recordings can be unavailable because of consent choices, blockers, script failures, or other browser restrictions. Mask sensitive fields and exclude data that should not be captured. Microsoft says sites targeting or receiving users in the EEA, United Kingdom, and Switzerland must convey consent status using its documented methods.
Choose it when: you want recordings and heatmaps on a limited budget, especially alongside GA4. Consider another option if self-hosting, extensive governance, or a single comprehensive marketing analytics platform is essential.
3. Lucky Orange: best for a live visitor view and intervention
Best for: Ecommerce and lead-generation teams that want to monitor active visitors and have a reason to engage them. Visit Lucky Orange.
Lucky Orange advertises Live Visitor View alongside recordings, dynamic heatmaps, conversion funnels, page and form analytics, live chat, surveys, and announcements. That combination makes it the closest fit in this shortlist when “live tracking” means both viewing activity and potentially responding during a visit. Feature descriptions are from the vendor’s comparison and pricing material.
Pricing is session-based and should be checked against your traffic and billing preference. The surfaced vendor material lists Build at $39 per month, Expand at $249 per month, and Scale at $1,049 per month, with Build also shown at $32 per month on annual billing and allowances beginning at 3,500 monthly sessions. Treat these as page signals rather than permanent quotes: plans, billing periods, and regional prices can change.
Choose it when: someone can use live chat or other interventions and the team will act on the behavior data. If you only need a simple current-visitor estimate, this broader CRO suite may be more than necessary.
4. Hotjar: best for pairing behavior data with feedback
Best for: UX and product teams that want to see what visitors do and ask what they think. Sign up for Hotjar.
Hotjar separates behavior observation—such as heatmaps and recordings—from feedback features such as surveys and feedback, with additional research functionality. Higher tiers include capabilities such as funnels, trends, and JavaScript-error tracking. The vendor lists integrations including Google Analytics, HubSpot, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Segment, and Optimizely on its pricing page.
Budgeting takes more than comparing a headline monthly price: products, session allowances, billing periods, and packages interact. The displayed comparison has shown Basic as free and paid product prices such as Plus at $31, Business at $79, and Scale at $170 per month, while usage-based presentations show different starting points. These are pricing-page signals, not a universal quote; verify the current plan and included usage before purchase. Hotjar recommends capturing at least 80% of sessions, but that is a vendor recommendation, not a requirement for every site.
Choose it when: surveys and behavioral evidence belong in the same workflow. For campaign attribution and ecommerce reporting, keep a dedicated analytics product such as GA4 or Matomo.
5. Mouseflow: best for finding funnel, form, and friction problems
Best for: CRO teams investigating where users drop out of a journey. Try Mouseflow.
Mouseflow combines session replay with click, scroll, and geographic heatmaps, funnels, form analytics, journey analysis, friction detection, surveys, and data exports. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 500 monthly sessions, Essential at $25 per month for 5,000 sessions, Advanced at $109 for 25,000, Premium at $319 for 100,000, and custom Enterprise pricing. It also lists a 14-day full-feature trial.
Sessions are the key cost and capacity unit. According to the pricing-page FAQ, tracking stops when a monthly session allocation is exhausted until it refills or the plan is upgraded. That makes quota monitoring important on a growing or seasonal site. Mouseflow’s strength is diagnosing recorded behavior; do not assume that its replay workflow is equivalent to an operator console showing every current visitor.
Rank #4
Choose it when: you need to pinpoint form or checkout friction and can plan around session limits. A site needing only a live traffic count can use a simpler analytics dashboard.
6. Plausible Analytics: best simple, privacy-focused realtime dashboard
Best for: Small sites and privacy-conscious teams that want a comprehensible traffic dashboard rather than session recordings. Visit Plausible.
Plausible’s realtime dashboard refreshes every 30 seconds. Its definition of current visitors is people who visited during the previous five minutes, so the number is a recent activity window rather than an exact count of people presently on a page. The dashboard includes recent unique visitors, page views, channels, sources, campaigns, top pages, locations, devices, and conversions. Details are in the realtime dashboard documentation.
Plausible is suited to basic source, page, and goal monitoring, but it does not provide session replay, heatmaps, or individual visitor journey viewing. It is a subscription product; check its official site for current pricing rather than relying on an outdated quote.
Choose it when: a clean traffic view is enough. For richer visitor logs, ecommerce reporting, or self-hosting, compare Matomo.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Matomo: best for analytics depth and data ownership
Best for: Organizations that want detailed analytics with hosted or self-hosted deployment options. Explore Matomo.
Matomo offers realtime reports, visitor logs and profiles, segmentation, goals, campaign and event tracking, ecommerce tracking, APIs, and privacy controls. Its realtime reports include visits, visit logs, and a realtime map; see Matomo’s realtime report guide. The platform distinguishes hosted Cloud from self-hosted On-Premise deployment, as described on its pricing page.

Self-hosting can provide more control over where analytics data is stored, but it also puts security, updates, backups, availability, and configuration work on the site owner. Some capabilities, including heatmaps and session recording, may depend on plan or add-ons. Cloud pricing is based on hits; the surfaced page has shown examples of $26 per month for 50,000 hits and $204 per month for 1 million hits, excluding tax. Verify currency, billing period, allowance, and current price directly with Matomo.
Choose it when: ownership, visitor logs, ecommerce analysis, or self-hosting matters enough to justify more setup and administration than a simpler dashboard requires.
Which combination should you use?
| Need | Practical combination | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free starting point for traffic and usability | GA4 + Clarity | GA4 covers acquisition and events; Clarity adds recordings and heatmaps. |
| Simple privacy-focused traffic reporting | Plausible | One lightweight dashboard covers current activity, sources, pages, and goals without replay. |
| Privacy ownership and deeper reporting | Matomo, optionally self-hosted | Combines visitor records and broader analytics with deployment control, at the cost of more administration. |
| Checkout or form optimization | GA4 + Mouseflow or Lucky Orange | Use analytics for outcomes and a behavior tool to inspect friction; Lucky Orange adds live intervention features. |
| Feedback-led UX research | GA4 + Hotjar | Use aggregate conversion data with recordings and visitor feedback. |
| Sales or support engagement during a visit | GA4 + Lucky Orange | GA4 measures outcomes while Lucky Orange supplies a live view and engagement tools. |
Choose based on billable unit and practical capacity, not just the word “free.” Compare monthly versus daily sessions versus hits, whether recordings are sampled, retention, project and seat limits, survey response limits, export access, and whether tracking stops at a quota. Under 5,000 monthly sessions, Clarity or Plausible may be sufficient for many small sites; that is a selection guideline, not a vendor limit.
How to install and verify visitor tracking
- Create an account and add the correct website or analytics property.
- Copy the vendor’s current tracking snippet or choose a supported integration.
- Install it in the site header or template, through Google Tag Manager, or with the platform’s supported WordPress, Shopify, Wix, or WooCommerce integration.
- Publish the change to the live site, not only a staging environment.
- Open the site in a private browser window, visit a page, and trigger a test event if relevant.
- Return to the analytics tool and check for the test visit after its expected processing interval.
- Configure masking, exclusions, retention, consent behavior, bot and internal-traffic handling, and team permissions.
- Document the service in the site privacy notice and connect it to the consent-management workflow where required.
Exact menu names vary by platform and vendor version. A script visible in page source does not prove that data was accepted and processed. If no visit appears, check the site or property ID, confirm the published script and live domain, temporarily test without browser extensions, inspect console errors and network requests, verify consent behavior, and check filters, time zone, and date range. For single-page applications, configure route-change or virtual page-view tracking. Then allow for the tool’s processing interval and use its installation verifier or support documentation.

Analytics reports represent observed activity, not every person who visits. Ad blockers, browser privacy features, JavaScript failures, consent rejection, bot filtering, identity methods, and processing delays all affect the count. Two tools can disagree because their activity windows, sessions, attribution rules, and filters differ; neither number is automatically a precise census.
Before enabling recordings, mask form fields and exclude passwords, payment-card details, health information, private messages, and other unnecessary sensitive content. Limit recording access to authorized staff. Review cookies and identifiers, vendors and subprocessors, hosting location, retention, deletion processes, cross-border transfers, and applicable consent or opt-out requirements. Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and implementation; a vendor’s privacy-oriented features do not make a particular deployment compliant by themselves.
Microsoft specifically says sites targeting or receiving users in the EEA, United Kingdom, and Switzerland must transmit consent status through its documented methods in its Clarity FAQ. Apply the appropriate consent mode or vendor consent API when required, and avoid sharing identifiable recordings without an appropriate lawful basis and safeguards.
