Amazon Associates can pay commissions on qualifying purchases, but approval, three qualifying sales in 180 days and ongoing policy compliance all matter.

Amazon Associates lets eligible publishers and creators earn commissions when people use their tagged links and make qualifying purchases. For the U.S. Amazon.com program, applicants generally need to generate three qualifying sales within 180 days of applying; personal orders do not count. Approval and meaningful earnings are not guaranteed: you need useful public content, genuine audience interest and ongoing compliance with Amazon’s rules.

What is Amazon Associates?

Amazon Associates is Amazon’s affiliate-marketing program. You publish recommendations on an eligible website, app or other approved public property, create a tagged Special Link using Amazon’s tools, and may earn a commission if a visitor follows the link and completes a qualifying purchase or action. Amazon provides the shopping experience and handles orders; Associates do not own the customer relationship, set Amazon’s prices or inventory, or provide order support. Amazon Associates Operating Agreement

You do not need to sell products, hold inventory or become an Amazon seller to join. Amazon Associates is separate from Seller Central, Vendor Central, Amazon Handmade and Merch. It is also distinct from the Amazon Influencer Program, which is aimed at eligible creators and can include a Storefront and creator-specific features. A social account alone does not guarantee Influencer eligibility.

Who can join?

Amazon’s agreement defines eligible publishing properties broadly. Potential Associates include bloggers, publishers, app developers, businesses, YouTube creators and social-media publishers, subject to Amazon’s review and current policies. The program details here concern Amazon.com in the United States; Amazon runs separate country programs with different terms, currencies, tax requirements and commission schedules. A public profile or website is not automatically eligible. A private or closed property, empty domain, paywall-only site, scraped pages or a thin collection of copied product descriptions may not meet Amazon’s standards. Amazon says Sites should be publicly available and contain robust original content; its guidance gives about 10 posts as a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed approval threshold. How much can Amazon affiliates earn?

There is no standard income. Amazon says it does not promise traffic, earnings or commission income. A click by itself usually earns nothing: the visitor must make a qualifying purchase or complete another eligible action, and Amazon’s qualifying-purchase rules apply. Commissions are based on qualifying revenue or sale price, not necessarily the product’s listed price; fulfillment conditions, returns, cancellations, excluded items and other adjustments can affect what qualifies. Amazon.com standard commission examples

The following are examples from Amazon.com’s published U.S. schedule, checked August 2026. Rates and category assignments can change; Amazon’s classification controls, and these figures do not apply automatically to other country programs. Special commissions and bounties may have separate conditions. Amazon.com commission income statement

Category or action Published example
Amazon Games 20%
Luxury Beauty, Luxury Stores Beauty and Amazon Explore 10%
Amazon Haul 7%
Digital Music, Physical Music, Handmade and Digital Videos 5%
Physical Books, Kitchen and Automotive 4.5%
Selected devices, apparel, luggage, jewelry and related categories 4%
Toys, Furniture, Home, Home Improvement, Pets, Outdoors, Tools, Sports and many other categories 3%
Several excluded categories and services 0%
Prime Paid Membership bounty example $3 per successful eligible membership purchase

Amazon’s marketing page uses “up to 10%” language, but that is not a typical or guaranteed rate; the published schedule includes both higher and zero-rate examples. Amazon Associates

A simple earnings estimate

Estimated commission = qualifying revenue × applicable commission rate. For illustration only, 100 qualifying orders averaging $60 would represent $6,000 in qualifying revenue. At a 3% category rate, the estimated commission would be $180 before returns, exclusions, adjustments, taxes or other deductions. This arithmetic is not an earnings forecast.

What affects actual earnings?

  • Qualified traffic and intent: readers already comparing products or preparing to buy are generally more commercially relevant than broad, untargeted visits.
  • Trust and usefulness: clear selection criteria, honest trade-offs and specific use cases help readers decide; a list of unexplained product links does not.
  • Category and order value: commission rates differ substantially, and a higher-priced item does not necessarily mean a higher commission percentage.
  • Content upkeep: prices, inventory and products change, so older buying advice may need revision.
  • Compliance: policy violations can cost commissions or participation in the program.

Amazon says commissions are generally paid about 60 days after the end of the month in which they were earned, subject to applicable payment terms and thresholds. Amazon Associates

What to prepare before applying

  • A public website, app or eligible social profile that you control and intend to use.
  • A clear subject and audience, with original content that demonstrates value. Amazon’s guidance suggests about 10 posts as a rule of thumb, not an automatic pass. Application and review guidance
  • Useful material such as original comparisons, buying guides, tutorials or first-hand reviews where you genuinely have experience.
  • Clear publisher information and contact details, plus privacy and legal pages appropriate to your property.
  • A plan for attracting legitimate visitors and earning three qualifying sales during the review window.
  • Payment and tax information. Tax obligations depend on your circumstances and applicable rules; keep records of commissions, expenses and adjustments and consult a tax professional for individualized advice.
  • A list of every website, app, channel or public social page you intend to use. Amazon reviews the Sites supplied in the application; list properties you control, and use Associates Central to update them as needed.

Amazon’s 2026 policy update defines original content as including commentary, analysis or transformation that adds value. Copied descriptions, product images or automatically assembled listings should not be the substance of a property. Amazon policy comparison and updates

How to apply for Amazon Associates

  1. Prepare your publishing property. Make it public, navigable and useful before applying. Build original material that shows what you publish and whom it serves.
  2. Register at the official Associates site. Start at Amazon Associates Central and select the country program matching your audience and business. This article describes Amazon.com in the United States.
  3. Enter account, payee and Site information. List each website, app and public social property you expect to use. Do not assume one approved property automatically covers every other one.
  4. Describe your audience and traffic accurately. Explain what you publish, how people find it and how you expect to use links. Do not inflate traffic or promise results you cannot substantiate.
  5. Complete payment and tax details. Amazon’s requirements vary by country and account. For U.S. tax treatment, use current official guidance or consult a qualified tax professional rather than relying on a generic estimate.
  6. Use Amazon’s link tools and begin publishing. Generate Special Links through Amazon’s approved tools, place them in relevant content, and follow disclosure and placement rules.
  7. Earn three qualifying sales within 180 days. Amazon reviews the application after qualifying sales; personal orders do not count. Reaching three sales is a review trigger, not a guarantee of final approval. Application review and qualifying-sales guidance

How to get your first three qualifying sales

Build content around questions your audience is already asking, not around links you want to place. A buying guide that explains how to choose a product, a comparison that distinguishes real trade-offs, or a tutorial tied to a relevant item can help readers make an informed choice.

  • Choose products that genuinely fit your topic and audience.
  • Explain selection criteria, strengths, limitations and who should consider each option.
  • Use first-hand claims only when they are true; do not imply you tested or own a product if you did not.
  • Promote content through search, social or other channels only in ways Amazon permits.
  • Track clicks and outcomes to learn whether readers find the recommendations useful.
  • Do not buy through your own links, solicit artificial purchases or manipulate orders to meet the threshold.

Amazon can withdraw an application if the required sales are not generated within the 180-day period. If your application is rejected or withdrawn, improve the public content and audience readiness before applying again; Amazon says a rejected Associates ID cannot simply be reinstated. How to create and use Amazon affiliate links

Amazon Special Links include your Associate identifier so eligible activity can be attributed to your account. Use Amazon’s own linking tools and approved formats. Do not manually alter links, substitute unauthorized product data, or rely on a third-party link tool unless its behavior is demonstrably allowed by Amazon’s current terms. Operating Agreement · Participation requirements

Place a link where it supports the reader’s decision, such as beside a relevant recommendation or in a comparison. Amazon controls attribution and qualifying-purchase treatment; a click does not guarantee a commission. Avoid assuming a universal attribution window, since the current terms and circumstances govern.

Disclosures: Amazon’s rule and the FTC standard

Amazon requires this statement to be clearly and prominently displayed: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” For social-media user-generated content, Amazon says the statement must be associated with the account. The FTC separately expects disclosures of material connections to be clear and conspicuous. “Affiliate link” by itself may not tell consumers that the publisher can be compensated. Put plain-language disclosure near the recommendation or link, where people will see it, including on mobile. A footer alone is not automatically sufficient. FTC Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking

Example for a review or buying guide: Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Some links below are paid links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no additional cost to you. Adapt placement and wording for the actual medium; for a video, social post or comparison table, make the relationship clear where the endorsement appears.

Rules that can cost you commissions or your account

  • Self-purchases and artificial orders: personal orders do not count toward the application sales requirement. Do not manipulate referrals or ask people to place sham orders. Amazon application guidance
  • Misleading endorsements: do not claim Amazon sponsors or endorses you, or exaggerate your relationship with Amazon. Describe product experience honestly. Operating Agreement
  • Copied or thin content: add meaningful commentary, analysis or transformation rather than reproducing merchant copy or auto-generated product listings. Amazon policy updates
  • Improper use of links, tools or Amazon content: use authorized Special Links and content methods. Avoid prohibited cloaking, redirecting, link substitution or interference with Amazon-site features. Participation requirements
  • Email, SMS and offline promotion: Amazon’s participation rules restrict Special Links in printed materials, mailings, SMS/MMS, email, attachments and oral solicitations unless expressly permitted. Do not assume a link may be placed anywhere. Participation requirements
  • Paid and boosted ads: under the April 14, 2026 update, purchases from customers referred through paid or boosted advertisements linking to Amazon are disqualified, subject to limited exceptions. Check the current rules before using search ads, social boosts, sponsored placements, retargeting or other paid promotion. Amazon policy comparison and updates
  • Unlisted properties: list the sites and profiles you use and keep your account information current; do not assume authorization automatically extends to an unlisted channel.

Amazon’s agreement allows it to suspend or terminate participation and cease commission payments for violations. Read the current agreement and participation requirements rather than relying on old advice. Operating Agreement · Amazon policies

What changed in Amazon’s 2026 policies?

Amazon published changes effective April 14, 2026. Three points matter for prospective Associates:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fulfillment within the applicable 180-day period: under the updated rule, the product must be shipped, streamed or downloaded by the customer and paid for within the relevant period to qualify.
  • Paid or boosted referrals: purchases referred through paid or boosted advertisements linking to Amazon were added to disqualified purchases, with limited exceptions.
  • Original content: the definition now expressly calls for commentary, analysis or transformation that adds value.

These changes are in Amazon’s policy comparison and updates. The same update distinguishes onsite commission calculations: in the relevant onsite context they apply only to direct qualifying purchases of the same ASIN variant as the linked product detail page. That onsite rule should not be treated as a general description of ordinary off-site Associates links.

When Amazon Associates is a good fit—and when it is not

May fit if… May be a poor fit if…
Your audience already shops on Amazon and your content helps people choose products. Your business depends on high or recurring commissions that Amazon’s variable schedule may not provide.
You can attract relevant visitors through useful content, search, video or compliant social distribution. Your strategy depends on sending paid or boosted ads directly to Amazon without checking the restrictions.
You value a broad catalog and a familiar checkout experience. You need control of customer data, checkout or the ongoing customer relationship.
You can maintain disclosures, update content and adapt to changing terms. Your content is mostly copied, automated or too thin to add value.
Amazon commissions can sit alongside other revenue sources. Your audience is outside the relevant Amazon country program or you cannot sustain the compliance work.

Amazon Associates can diversify a publisher’s income, but dependence on one merchant brings rate, policy and account risk. Amazon controls its rates and program terms, while the publisher remains responsible for content and compliance.

Alternatives to consider

  • Amazon Influencer Program: investigate it if you are an established social creator interested in a Storefront or creator tools; eligibility and features differ from standard Associates.
  • Direct brand programs or affiliate networks: these may offer different rates, attribution terms or reporting, but often have narrower catalogs or separate approval requirements.
  • Digital-product or SaaS programs: consider these when they better match your audience; terms and recurring-commission availability vary by provider.
  • Other retailers: compare effective earnings rather than headline rates. A lower rate from a trusted, high-converting merchant can outperform a higher rate with weak conversion.

For any alternative, compare product fit, conversion, attribution, payment terms, geography and compliance burden. Do not assume a higher advertised rate will produce higher net income.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
