HP Settled a $4 Million False-Discount Case Over PCs and Keyboards—What Buyers Need to Know

HP Inc. agreed to a $4 million settlement over allegations that discounts shown on HP.com made certain computers and peripherals look like better deals than they were. The court granted final approval on August 27, 2025, and entered judgment the next day. HP denied wrongdoing; the settlement is not an admission of liability. The claim deadline was June 9, 2025, so the original claims period has passed.

What did the HP lawsuit allege?

The case, Carvalho v. HP, Inc., No. 5:21-cv-08015-PCP, was heard in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The complaint alleged that HP.com used reference or strikethrough prices that were inflated compared with recent or typical prices. According to the allegations, those displayed prices could make a discount appear larger or more urgent than it was.

The plaintiffs asserted claims under California’s Consumer Legal Remedies Act, False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law, as well as a claim for unjust enrichment. These were allegations resolved through a settlement—not a court finding that HP’s pricing was unlawful, and not a finding that HP products were defective.

During discovery, the parties reviewed sales data for 287,784 orders and more than 500,000 screenshots of HP’s website. The court approved a negotiated compromise after discovery and mediation; that review does not change the fact that HP denied wrongdoing.

What did the settlement provide?

The agreement established a $4 million non-reversionary common fund. It was designated to pay valid claims, court-approved notice and administration expenses, service awards to the class representatives, and attorneys’ fees and costs for class counsel. The $4 million is the total fund, not a stated payment amount for each buyer. The available settlement terms do not establish an individual payout figure here.

Who was included in the settlement class?

The class definition covered individuals in the United States who bought specified HP products at a discount on HP.com from June 5, 2021, through October 28, 2024. The particular product also had to have been offered on sale more than 75% of the time during that period. That threshold concerns the product’s sale frequency over the period; it is not a requirement that an individual buyer made repeated purchases.

Products covered

  • Specified HP desktop computers
  • Specified HP laptops
  • Specified HP mice
  • Specified HP keyboards

Not every HP device or peripheral necessarily qualified: the product had to fall within the settlement’s specified products and meet the sale-frequency condition.

Exclusions

The class excluded purchases of more than two of the same product in a single order, specified insiders, and people who opted out. The settlement’s product and class definitions—not simply owning an HP computer or keyboard—determined coverage.

Can buyers still submit a claim?

No claim could be submitted by the original deadline after June 9, 2025. The court later granted final approval, and the final judgment was entered on August 28, 2025. The settlement site was the designated source for claim administration and settlement details, but no current claim window is established by the dates and terms summarized here.

Did HP admit it misled customers?

No. HP denied any wrongdoing, and the settlement expressly was not an admission of wrongdoing. Final approval means the court approved the negotiated settlement and its resolution of the class claims; it is not the same as a judgment that the alleged pricing conduct occurred as claimed.
