KKR completed its acquisition of Corel from Vector Capital on July 3, 2019. Contemporary reporting put the deal’s value at more than $1 billion, but the companies did not disclose the exact price. That distinction matters: the acquisition is confirmed; the figure is a reported valuation, not an officially published purchase-price total.
What happened in the 2019 acquisition?
KKR, an investment firm, acquired Corel Corporation from Vector Capital. Corel confirmed the transaction had closed on July 3, 2019, but its announcement did not provide financial terms. Corel’s completion announcement establishes that the sale was completed, rather than remaining a proposal.
TechCrunch reported contemporaneously that sources valued the transaction at more than $1 billion. Because the parties did not publish the price, public information cited here does not establish whether that figure was equity value or enterprise value, whether it included assumed debt, or how the consideration was structured. It is therefore more precise to say the deal was reported at over $1 billion than to say KKR paid a confirmed exact amount.
What did the deal include?
Corel was more than the CorelDRAW graphics brand. Its portfolio included products such as WordPerfect, WinZip, MindManager, Painter, PaintShop Pro, VideoStudio, Pinnacle and Roxio. Corel had also recently acquired Parallels, which was part of the company acquired by KKR in 2019. Contemporary coverage of the transaction noted that Parallels acquisition.

The breadth of the portfolio helps explain why the transaction drew attention beyond CorelDRAW users: Corel brought together creative, office, compression, project-management and virtualization software brands. The sources do not provide a price breakdown by product or establish a separate value for Parallels.
Why might the portfolio have appealed to KKR?
Corel’s official announcement described a shared vision with KKR and credited Vector’s ownership with transformative acquisitions, revenue growth and improved profitability. The company did not publish a detailed investment thesis or disclose how KKR expected to develop each product line.

A reasonable interpretation—not a disclosed rationale—is that a collection of established software brands, their existing customer bases and the company’s acquisition history offered a platform for further investment. The recent addition of Parallels also broadened the portfolio beyond Corel’s traditional creative and productivity categories. The public announcements do not show how much of the reported valuation reflected any one of those factors.
How did Corel become Alludo?
In 2022, Corel changed its corporate identity to Alludo. That was a company rebrand, not an announcement that the CorelDRAW product had vanished: CorelDRAW continued as a product and brand while the parent company used the Alludo name. A company release referring to CorelDRAW under the Alludo identity reflects that distinction.

Who owns the Corel businesses now?
The ownership picture changed again in 2026. On February 26, Corel and Parallels announced a separation: Vector Capital would acquire the creativity and productivity software business and related brands, while KKR would retain Parallels. The announcement did not disclose the transaction’s financial terms. The separation announcement identifies the two sides of the split.
On May 5, Vector’s acquisition closed and the creativity and productivity business relaunched as Corel, backed by Vector Capital. The company said Prasannaa Ganesan would lead it as CEO; Corel’s relaunch announcement confirms the closing and return to the Corel corporate name. Corel’s subsequent leadership announcement describes the company’s portfolio and earlier acquisition-platform history.

“Independent” in the relaunch description means the Corel business is separate from the former KKR-backed structure; it does not mean it has no owner. Vector Capital is its backer. Nor does the 2026 transaction’s undisclosed price have any established connection to the reported 2019 valuation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the ownership history mean for customers?
A corporate acquisition does not by itself establish a change to a customer’s license, subscription, support entitlement or upgrade terms. Those depend on the product, edition and applicable agreement. For a current purchase or support question, check the relevant product page and documentation rather than inferring terms from an ownership announcement. Corel’s current portfolio is listed at Corel’s official site.

For a past purchase, Corel provides guidance for finding account and order history. The 2026 split also makes it important not to assume that every former Corel brand is still part of one company: Parallels remained with KKR, while the creativity and productivity portfolio returned to Vector-backed Corel.
