MediaTek Leads Smartphone Chipset Shipments Again, but Its Lead Is Narrower

MediaTek was the top smartphone AP/SoC supplier by global shipment volume in Q1 2026, but a shrinking share and market-wide shipment decline make its lead less secure than the headline suggests.

MediaTek remained the world’s largest smartphone application-processor and system-on-chip supplier by shipment volume in Q1 2026, with 32% of the global market, according to Counterpoint Research. Qualcomm followed at 23%, Apple at 19% and UNISOC at 14%. But MediaTek’s share was six percentage points lower than a year earlier, so the result is continued leadership—not a widening lead or proof that its chips are the best, most profitable or strongest in premium phones.

What “market leader” means in this ranking

The figures measure global smartphone AP/SoC shipment share: the proportion of smartphone application processors or system-on-chips shipped that each vendor supplied in Q1 2026. They are not shares of all semiconductor sales, chipset revenue, modem revenue, phones sold to consumers or smartphone brands. Shipment data can also differ from handset sell-through because chips and phones may be held in inventory.

That distinction matters because a vendor can lead in units without leading in revenue, premium devices, performance or profitability. Apple is included even though it primarily designs chips for its own phones, rather than competing for Android manufacturers’ chip orders in the same way as MediaTek and Qualcomm.

Q1 2026 smartphone chipset shipment shares

Vendor Q1 2026 share Q1 2025 share Change
MediaTek 32% 38% -6 percentage points
Qualcomm 23% 27% -4 percentage points
Apple 19% 15% +4 percentage points
UNISOC 14% 10% +4 percentage points
Samsung 7% 6% +1 percentage point
HiSilicon 4% 4% No change
Others 1% 1% No change

MediaTek’s lead has lasted, but its share has fluctuated

Counterpoint’s reported quarterly series shows MediaTek ahead of Qualcomm and Apple in every listed quarter from Q1 2024 through Q1 2026. That makes “leads again” fair, but not “steadily gaining”: MediaTek’s share varied from 41% in Q1 2024 to 31% in Q4 2024 and Q4 2025, before reaching 32% in Q1 2026.

Why MediaTek can lead on volume

A wide reach across Android price tiers

Shipment leadership is consistent with MediaTek’s broad presence in Android phones, especially mass-market and mid-range models. Counterpoint linked Q1 2026 activity to newer low- and mid-range launches using the Dimensity 6000 and 7000 families, as well as AI upgrades associated with Dimensity 9300. The mix matters: a supplier serving many price points can ship more chips than a rival concentrated in fewer, higher-priced devices.

Expansion into flagship products

MediaTek has also sought more premium design wins with its Dimensity line. In earnings-call materials, the company said flagship share gains were supporting its business and identified Dimensity 9500 as a major product for the 2025–26 cycle. These are management statements about strategy and performance, not independent evidence that MediaTek is superior across premium phones. How MediaTek’s rivals differ

Qualcomm remains a major premium Android supplier

Qualcomm ranked second at 23% in Q1 2026, down from 27% a year earlier. Its lower unit share does not make it irrelevant: Snapdragon has strong recognition, and Qualcomm remains important in premium Android phones, with connectivity and modem expertise and high-end design wins. Shipment share alone cannot determine which supplier has greater revenue, margins, influence in premium devices or technological capability.

Apple’s share follows its own phone business

Apple rose from 15% to 19% of smartphone AP/SoC shipments year over year in Q1 2026. Counterpoint attributed the gain to higher shipments of newer iPhones, including the iPhone 17 series and iPhone 17e using Apple A-series silicon. Because Apple mainly supplies its own devices, its increase reflects iPhone shipments as well as chip design—not a set of third-party Android design wins. Apple also led the broader smartphone market by brand with 25% shipment share in Q4 2025, according to Omdia; that is a different market and period from chipset share.

UNISOC’s growth adds pressure at the lower end

UNISOC gained four percentage points, rising from 10% in Q1 2025 to 14% in Q1 2026. That makes it a notable growing supplier, particularly in the context of cost-sensitive devices, but the reported share change does not establish a single cause or prove that UNISOC took those units directly from MediaTek.

Other proprietary chips complicate the comparison

Samsung and Huawei’s HiSilicon also appeared in Counterpoint’s Q1 2026 ranking at 7% and 4%, respectively. Google, Samsung and Apple’s in-house silicon can shape the addressable market for merchant suppliers, but these businesses do not all compete for the same customers, regions or device tiers. Rankings can differ by geography, 4G or 5G support, OEM and price segment.

Unit leadership is not the same as revenue or premium leadership

Smartphone chips are not economically interchangeable. A high-volume supplier can lead in shipments while a rival captures more value from expensive chips or premium devices. Counterpoint’s Q3 2024 AP-market analysis illustrated this split: MediaTek led by unit share while Apple led by AP-market revenue. That is historical evidence of why the measures differ, not a current Q1 2026 revenue ranking. Counterpoint’s Q3 2024 analysis does not establish which vendor led revenue in Q1 2026.

Nor does shipment share establish which chip is best. A phone’s real-world speed, battery life, gaming performance, AI features and camera results depend on the chip alongside cooling, memory, software, display settings and the manufacturer’s implementation. A fair product comparison needs model-specific performance and efficiency evidence; the market-share ranking does not provide it.

A shrinking market changes what “winning” looks like

Counterpoint reported that global smartphone SoC shipments fell 15% year over year in H1 2026. It said MediaTek and Qualcomm shipments each declined by more than 25%, while Apple, Samsung, Google and UNISOC gained share for different reasons. This shows why share and absolute shipments must be kept separate: a supplier can retain first place, or gain relative share, while shipping fewer chips overall. Counterpoint’s H1 2026 SoC shipment analysis describes the decline.

Rising memory costs and weaker demand are part of the pressure. Omdia forecast that global smartphone shipments would fall about 7% in 2026, citing memory constraints and geopolitical pressures; it said higher memory costs were especially difficult for entry-level phone economics. This is a forecast, not a final full-year result. Omdia’s March 2026 outlook sets out that projection.

MediaTek’s own comments likewise point to a difficult market rather than an assured expansion. The company said its mobile-phone business grew 8% year over year in U.S.-dollar terms in 2025, while warning that memory and bill-of-materials costs would pressure the 2026 smartphone market. In its Q1 2026 earnings materials, it said mobile-phone revenue was expected to improve in the second half of 2026 and that Smart Edge Platforms growth would partly offset smartphone weakness. These are company results and outlook, not independent forecasts of chipset share. See MediaTek’s Q4 2025 earnings-call materials and its Q1 2026 earnings-call materials.

What the ranking establishes—and what it does not

  • It establishes: MediaTek had the largest global smartphone AP/SoC shipment share in Q1 2026 and had led each quarter in the reported series since Q1 2024.
  • It does not establish: MediaTek had the largest chipset revenue in Q1 2026, led the premium segment, made the fastest or most efficient chips, or earned the highest profit.
  • It also does not establish: that Qualcomm lost its premium Android position, or that share gains by Apple or UNISOC came directly at MediaTek’s expense.

What to watch next

The meaningful test is whether MediaTek can defend its unit lead while improving its position in higher-value products. Relevant indicators include the next shipment-share reports, whether flagship Dimensity devices win broader adoption, whether UNISOC continues gaining among cost-sensitive phones, and how much proprietary silicon from Apple, Google, Samsung and Huawei changes the supplier mix. Memory prices and smartphone demand also matter: they can alter both total shipments and the balance between low-cost and premium models.
