Amazon’s Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR) is a driver-assistance system that uses cameras, computer vision, route data and overhead light projectors inside equipped delivery vans. At each stop, a green “O” identifies packages to remove, while a red “X” marks packages that should remain in the van. Amazon announced it on October 9, 2024; it is not a new 2026 launch.
What VAPR does inside an Amazon delivery van
A delivery van can contain parcels for dozens of addresses. Even when packages are organized by tote, shelf or delivery sequence, drivers may still need to search, move boxes and read labels in a confined cargo area.
VAPR is intended to identify the parcels assigned to the driver’s current stop. Cameras scan the cargo area, and projectors place visual markers directly on packages:
- Green “O” or circle: a package associated with the current stop.
- Red “X”: a package intended for a later stop or otherwise not selected for the current delivery.
- Audio and visual cues: additional confirmation for the driver.
The markers are visible inside compatible vans. They are not projected onto parcels at a customer’s home and do not change the package itself. Amazon describes the system in its announcement at About Amazon.

How the system identifies the right parcels
Cameras and projectors
Interior cameras view multiple packages in the cargo area. Automotive light projectors then illuminate the parcels selected by the system. Amazon’s public descriptions call these devices light projectors; they do not establish that VAPR should be marketed as a laser package tracker.
Computer vision and barcode recognition
Machine-learning models interpret package labels and barcodes under varying lighting and packaging conditions. Amazon says VAPR builds on Amazon Robotics Identification (AR-ID), a computer-vision system developed for fulfillment-center inventory and picking tasks.
Route data and local processing
The system compares recognized package identifiers with route and stop information. AWS identifies Amazon SageMaker AI for computer-vision work and AWS IoT Greengrass for local communication and edge processing in the vehicle. That architecture allows cameras, projectors and navigation systems to coordinate without sending every video frame to a remote cloud service.

VAPR is best described as an AI-enabled computer-vision application. The published technical material does not describe it as generative AI, a large language model or an autonomous delivery robot.

- The driver follows the route to the next delivery stop.
- The navigation system identifies the stop and its associated deliveries.
- VAPR scans packages in the cargo area and reads available identifiers.
- The system matches those identifiers with the stop’s route data.
- Projectors place green marks on packages to retrieve and red marks on packages to leave behind.
- The driver removes the selected parcels and completes the delivery using the normal delivery process.
Amazon says the system can reduce the need to empty or reorganize totes, read every label manually, check names and addresses during the search, and scan parcels one at a time with a handheld device. It assists retrieval; it does not load the van, plan the entire route or independently deliver a parcel.
How much time and effort does Amazon say it saves?
Amazon’s early testing reported more than 30 minutes saved per route and a 67% reduction in drivers’ perceived physical and mental effort. In one driver account quoted by Amazon, retrieval that previously took two to five minutes per stop took about one minute with VAPR.

Those are company-reported early-test results, not an independently audited industry benchmark. “Perceived effort” is a survey-style outcome, not proof of a particular reduction in injuries, labor hours or customer wait times. A separate Amazon sustainability document reports an 88% reduction in reported package-retrieval frustration; that measures frustration, not the same outcome as the 67% effort figure. See Amazon’s fulfillment-center document.
| Reported item | What the figure means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than 30 minutes | Time Amazon says was saved per route | Early company testing |
| 67% | Reduction in perceived physical and mental effort | Amazon-reported perception measure |
| Two to five minutes to about one minute | Retrieval time described by one driver | Individual account, not a universal guarantee |
| 88% | Reduction in reported package-retrieval frustration | Separate Amazon material and outcome |
Why package sorting alone does not eliminate the problem
Sorting at a delivery station gives drivers an organized starting point, but a route can contain many stops and differently shaped parcels. Packages may shift during driving, become hidden behind larger boxes or require the driver to inspect labels in low light. VAPR moves part of that recognition task from the driver to an onboard vision system at the moment the package is needed.
It does not replace fulfillment-center picking, delivery-station sorting, route planning or the driver’s responsibility to verify a delivery.

Where VAPR is deployed
Amazon’s October 2024 announcement said it planned to install VAPR in 1,000 Rivian electric delivery vans by early 2025. Later company material says the rollout had begun and would continue, but the public sources available through August 18, 2026 do not provide a verified current fleet-wide total or a complete list of equipped stations. Contemporary coverage from The Associated Press and TechCrunch also describes the original 1,000-van plan.
VAPR is therefore not a feature in every Amazon van or on every route. Availability can vary by vehicle, delivery station, route and rollout status. A later update published through Publicnow confirms rollout language but does not establish a current nationwide count.

Amazon’s public descriptions explain the intended workflow, not a published failure rate. In practical use, any vision-based retrieval system must contend with conditions such as:

- Create Helloween Atmosphere: To create a laser swamp effect by a line light with fog machine for haunted houses. (Fog machine needed, but not included.) It can also add fun to Halloween and create a better atmosphere.
- Heat Dissipation: Long time working without stop if in suitable environment temperature (15-25℃). The equipped extended ring bracket helps with better heat dissipation, helping long-term stable performance and service life.
- Output: <5mW (Class IIIr)
- Packages hidden beneath or behind other parcels.
- Barcodes that are folded, torn, covered, wet, reflective or unreadable.
- Very dark, bright, dusty or cluttered cargo areas.
- Packages moved after scanning, causing a projected mark to land inaccurately.
- Incorrect route or stop data.
- Obstructed cameras or projectors, hardware faults and connectivity problems.
- A projected symbol landing partly off an irregularly shaped package.
A green marker is an aid, not evidence that a parcel can be delivered without normal verification. Amazon and its Delivery Service Partners would need clear fallback procedures for low-confidence scans, incorrect markers and system outages. Drivers may also need a way to report errors and continue with manual identification.
What VAPR could mean for drivers and customers
For drivers
The intended benefit is less bending, lifting, tote-emptying and label searching. Whether that translates into safer work depends on how route-time savings are used. If saved minutes reduce time pressure, the system could improve the workday; if they become a higher productivity expectation, the physical benefit may be offset by faster required pace.
Important unanswered operational questions include whether drivers can override a marker, how faults are recorded, who performs calibration and maintenance, and whether retrieval data is tied to individual driver performance.
For customers
Faster retrieval could shorten the time a van spends at each address and may reduce selection mistakes. However, the reviewed sources do not establish that VAPR changes promised delivery windows, guarantees fewer misdeliveries or produces a measured improvement in customer satisfaction. Any customer benefit is indirect and depends on the system’s accuracy, route conditions and the rest of Amazon’s delivery process.

VAPR is a real, narrowly targeted driver-assistance system first announced in 2024. It combines computer vision, barcode recognition, route information, cameras and projected green and red symbols to help a human driver find the correct parcels inside an equipped van. Amazon reports meaningful early-test time and effort improvements, but those figures are not independent guarantees. VAPR is not autonomous delivery, not generative AI and not yet documented as a feature across Amazon’s entire fleet.
